Stanley Cup (merged)

I just called my dad and congratulated him, at least somebody in my family is smiling this morning.

Monday looks pretty irrelevant now. Don't ya think?

Only thing more obnoxious than a front-running bandwagon jumper is a trash-talking front-running bandwagon jumper. How proud you must be -- picking the best team in the league paid off!

If you're calling me a bandwagon fan, I regret to inform you that you cannot be any further from the truth. What's really obnoxious is a bitter fan being jealous that his team wasn't hoisting the Cup last night. If you were not refering to me, then my apologies.

So you're from Detroit, then?

He made that comment in the first period of the game last night. To taunt him about it the morning after "your" team won the Cup over "his" team is just petty, IMO.

I'm sorry, I didn't know that because Knoxville doesn't have an NHL team that I can't root for the same team that my father has spent the last 55 years pulling for. According to your very rules, there is nothing you can call me out on regarding my fandom.

congrats to the red wings, i don't think there was any real doubt that they were the better team, just wanted to see it go one more game......in the end, though, last night played a lot more like game 1 and 2....pens looked wore out from the get go......

As for my post toward him, I had not seen his comment until today. I didn't there was a imaginary 'window of opportunity' that had closed up regarding trash talk.

Completely legitimate. Withdrawn; my apologies.

The Red Wings are basically the Yankees, though, so perhaps you'll understand why I made that assumption. A really, really high percentage of Wings fans are bandwagonners, as I'm sure you've noticed.

Certainly understandable. I think this year proved, with the salary cap now in effect, that the the Wings are more than just a bought Championship. You didn't see the high dollar free agents of years past.

To add, they have had the same group of core guys. The free agents were just pieces to the puzzle. Lidstrom and Draper are the glue of this team. The ability of the Wings to scout Europe and draft accordingly is another large factor.

In terms of Cups won, i associate the Habs with the Yankees of the NHL, but can understand the Wings comparisons.

The Habs' period of real dominance was before most of us were around. No question that the best two teams in the last couple of decades have been the Wings and, well, Marty Broudeur. Add to that the free agents, the veritable all-star teams, and the fact that Americans are not going to jump on a French Canadian bandwagon, and the Wings have been by far the favorite team of the frontrunner for my whole adult life. "Dude! We got Brett Hull! We're going all the way!"

I never could root for Hull. I tolerated him in Detroit because they were winning but quite frankly the guy can shove it for all I care.

both teams led after the first period. and won game 5 and game 6. i don't know how much more you can read into that.

i knew if Detroit got a first period lead, the game would be over. yeah, it had exciting parts after the first period, but i had no doubts.

Pittsburgh led 2-0 after the first period in game five and had to go to triple OT to win the game. If you think a first period lead will win a hockey game, I retire from this discussion.

good.

i KNEW a first period lead would win the Cup for Detroit, and it did. therefore, i was hopeful for one.

Sorry, but I'm with Hman. If you "knew" a first period lead of less than, say, four goals would win, then you haven't watched much hockey. I don't think I've seen a playoff game that I knew was over in the first period since the Wings scored 7 goals on Patrick Roy and the Avs six or seven years ago.

Detroit is has won like 11 of their last 13 game 6s on the road to close out a series. I don't recall the exact number, but add that to the fact that they had closed out on the road every series so far on the road this post season. Then factor in the ability to possess the puck and I knew if they got a first period lead, the game was over.

I've watched them enough to be able to tell when it's going to be a fight or be over after the first period.

Detroit blew a first-period lead against Nashville in the first round. That didn't happen?

It's awesome how you know more from watching the games on TV than people who are involved with hockey for a living.

Pretty sure it was 0-0 after the first period of game 6 in Nashville. Please point me to where I said a lead after 1 means it's over every single time. We're only talking about the game Wednesday.
