Star Wars: Episode VII (December 18, 2015) ***SPOILERS***

Lucas has changed his story so many times over the years that I doubt even he could keep them straight. There was absolutely a point where he stated he had originally planned to do a trilogy of trilogies(9 movies). The problem is, we fanboys credited Lucas with more creativity than he actually possessed. What he does have in huge abundance is ego, and that led to his crybaby meltdown when fans criticized Ep. I - III.

As far as the Thrawn trilogy, Disney owns the rights to it. They bought up the entirety of LucasArts, which included the ownership of the EU novels. All of the EU was supposed to be canon when owned solely by Lucas. Lucas set boundaries on writers on what time eras they could touch, and which were off limits. He had a special position for someone whose sole purpose was to keep the continuity. Lucas is very much the control freak and wanted to be sure everything matched up. Pick up just about any of the later EU hardbacks and you'll find they always had a timeline at the beginning to show where certain stories fell into place.

Lucas had a vague outline past/before A New Hope. He will never convince me that he intended all the Storm Troopers to be clones of Boba Fett (or Jango Fett, whatever), a character he himself stated was intended to be a "throw away" character. Or that Anakin was the original builder of C-3P0. Or Yoda was buddies with Chewbacca.

Lucas was always the larger picture guy but he was shaky on the details. He was better off passing the heavy creative lifting to others but as you said, his ego got in the way.

I started collecting both Spider-Man and X-Men in the early '80's. Both were totally mutilated by retcons over the years. What Quesada allowed them to retcon in Spider-Man was tantamount to sacrilege, starting most prominently with Gwen having twins by Norman Osborn and leading all the way to the whole Mephisto reboot. I don't know what they've done since, but after all that, I lost the characters I had grown up on so I stopped caring.

Best story ever IMO was the Dark Phoenix Saga. I remember reading it as a kid and it was magical. I was a little perturbed when they brought Jean back because it took away from the magic of that story, but I eventually got over it. When they had Scott leave Jean for Emma, it was the beginning of the end for me.

I understand the need for some retcons. As time passes by, they'll come a point it no longer makes sense Frank Castle fought in Vietnam. But pointless retcons ruin great characters.

As not to derail this thread any further...

Here's the new Star Wars cast, at last!

Aside from the original actors, Anthony Sirkis and Max von Sydow, the rest of the cast are a bunch of unknowns.

John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow (the villain?) will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Leia Organa), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO), Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca), and Kenny Baker (R2-D2)

Daisy Ridley is pretty easy on the eyes.

The casting of both John Boyega and Adam Driver really excites me. Boyega was great in Attack the Block and Adam Driver is pretty much the only reason to watch Girls.

Just shoot him like they did Brando in Apocalypse Now. Lots of low light.

Oscar Isaac just recently played Llewyn Davis in Inside Llewyn Davis the Coen brothers film last year!

Look what they did for Jeff Daniels on Tron:Legacy, they'll have to do the same for Hamill, Ford and Fisher.

Apparently personal trainers have been working with both Hamill and Fischer for the last year or so. That Comicon picture is NOT recent. They will be fine for the movie. Alec Guinness wasn't exactly ripped when he played Obi Wan Kenobi.

Yeah really disappointed in Fisher based on that picture. I'm assuming she will just be sitting in a chair the whole movie or something, like Jabba the Hutt. I wonder if Ford will be as disinterested as usual.

Fisher was barely 20 years old and Hamill was in his mid-20's. Guinness was by no means a pensioner at the time, but he was nearly twice their age when Episode IV was being shot.

Thinking about this yesterday, If JJ Abrams is planning on introducing a female villain in this trilogy I REALLY hope he will consider Gwendoline Christie! She plays "Brienne of Tarth" in Game of Thrones and she is a complete bad ass on that show! She would be absolutely perfect as a female Sith because she's so physically imposing (She's 6'3).

If you have Jedi, you're almost certainly going to have Sith/Dark Jedi.
