Star Wars: Episode VII (December 18, 2015) ***SPOILERS***

Well didn't really expect this!!

Han Solo Considered a Co-Lead in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

Han Solo Considered a Co-Lead in STAR WARS: EPISODE VII

We already know that Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill are all officially back to reprise their roles as Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode VII. What we don't know is how big their roles will be. In the recent issue of Entertainment Weekly (via: Jedi News) we learn a little bit about that, and they confirm some previous rumors as well.

The report says that Hamill, Fisher, and Ford will all have "significant" roles, but make a point of saying that Han Solo is considered a co-lead in the film alongside three of the younger actors. So it seems that his role will be larger than Hamill's and Fisher's, which makes sense. After all, everyone loves Han Solo!

Then we have the following details and confirmations that EW provided "from sources with direct information about the project who spoke on condition of anonymity."

- Casting began in earnest in January.
- At press time, several roles have yet to be filled, including a major female lead.
- Michael Arndt's initial script has been significantly overhauled by [J.J.] Abrams and [Lawrence] Kasdan, which led to a delay in casting.
- Hamill, Fisher, and Ford had been secured to return for Episode VII before the Disney sale in 2012.

All of those things have been rumored, but this confirms it all. The coolest part about this, other than Solo having a big part in the movie, is that the three original stars were all set and ready to make this happen before Disney owned the franchise. The fact that we are going to see more Star Wars movies in the near future makes me so damn happy.

Some new info!

Star Wars filming to start on May 13 in Abu Dhabi desert

Things seem to be picking up pace around the Star Wars sets in the Abu Dhabi desert, with shooting expected to start on Tuesday and last until at least the end of the month.

Curious day-trippers are likely to be disappointed, however, as our sources report that police and army are checking all vehicles in the area and making sure that anyone who isn’t supposed to be there is sent quickly on their way.

Our sources also report that the sets are getting closer to completion, with a “whole world” having been built on an otherworldly salt lake at one location, a “shuttle-like” spacecraft, a large tower, a “big, centuries-old-looking market”, something the crew are reportedly referring to as the “alien house” and 10 to 15 “really fast buggies” powered by jet engines (landspeeders of Tatooine fame from the previous films, perhaps?)

We have also been told that two lorries of explosives have been brought to one of the sites under high security and that a blast crater has been created. So, it looks like the action in Abu Dhabi could be set to feature a major battle or spacecraft crash of some description.

We also learnt that a group of technicians from the United Kingdom and Los Angeles are currently on site applying the finishing touches before the shoot begins and that some, unnamed, members of the cast are already here and have been out in the dunes practising driving the vehicles they’ll be using when filming begins.

With some of the crew already here (a source told us they checked into an Abu Dhabi hotel on Tuesday) and the main shoot expected to last until at least the end of the month (almost three weeks – and possibly longer depending on hitches such as sandstorms delaying shooting), it certainly looks as if Abu Dhabi is set to play a major role in the new movie. Disney’s chairman Alan Horn’s recent remarks that “We did some second-unit work in Abu Dhabi” may have been a slight understatement.

Star Wars: Episode VII, which is rumoured to have the working title The Ancient Fear, stars famous names – old and new – with the lead trio from the original Star Wars trilogy, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hammill lining up alongside newcomers to the franchise such as Adam Driver and Max von Sydow, rumoured to be playing the new film’s lead villains. The film is due in cinemas in December 2015.

I kinda wish they'd leave Tatooine alone. It was cool in the first movie, but now it's been done to death. It's been in every Star Wars film except Empire.

Yeah but come on. Don't you want to see Tatooine as imagined by JJ Abrams?? :)

Hence that is prolly why it's in the picture.

Kasdan: "Tatooine isn't in Arndt's script.

Abrams: "WHAT?! Scrap it!"

I tend to agree. I hated that Anikan came from there.

And really Obiwan? Great place to hide Luke, on his Father's home world.

Can't believe this movie is still more than a year away. Reading some of the posts on here is making me geek out about it.

I think it would be interesting if they wrote the story to where Han and Leia never married. Man talk about a gut punch to fans everywhere. It has always been assumed that Han and Leia would marry after Return Of The Jedi but other than the EU there has been no evidence to support that it would be a foregone conclusion. For one thing, assuming that Leia does go on to train to become a Jedi, wouldn't that fall under the celibacy law of the original Jedi Order? Now granted, the new Jedi Order might not adopt that same law. However just going on what we know about the Jedi and their customs, it would make perfect sense for Leia to devote her life to her Jedi training and duties and she and Han never marry each other. By that same token, Han may have never been interested in marrying Leia. He was a scoundrel, a pirate, a free spirit. Han may have decided that marriage wouldn't suit him and he broke it off with Leia at some point.

Good to see the original stars getting reprisal roles, especially Mark Hammil. Dude fell off the face of the earth after starwars

He's done a TON of voice acting. Most notably as the Joker on Batman: TAS.

In a not-so-surprising move, Abrams has turned over the directing of Star Trek 3 to Robert Orci so Abrams can focus on Star Wars.

I think this was explained in the novel version of Revenge of the Sith. Yoda and Obi-Wan decided it would be best for Luke to go to Tatooine because Anakin hated it and by the time he was Vader, he wanted to shed every part of his past; therefore, him never returning to Tatooine.

Makes sense to me. Though if I were Luke, once I learned that Leia was my sister I'd be a little pissed to find out that she was raised as royalty on planet Switzerland while I was raised a poor as dirt farmer on planet Sahara Desert.
