Rogue One was awesome, and you all can hate on the prequels as much as you want but ROTS was great too.
I think ROTS is good compared to TPM and AOTC, but I don't think it's really all that great. It still has more bad than good IMO. Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan is honestly the only really good thing from from the prequels and even he was given garbage to work with. Lucas had to work hard to make that many good actors look bad.

What were the ESB comparisons?
Luke training Rey was the big one. It's Yoda and Luke all over again... Remote location, former Jedi in hiding, etc... Line of Walkers attacking what looks like a base, but instead of Hoth it appears to be some type of desert planet maybe. And instead of snowspeeders it's these hover things.

I guess...
Somebody has to train Rey, right? I mean, any Jedi training a new one would be redux of some kind.
The reasons for Lukes self imposed exile are different. Unlike Yoda, others know where he is now and that Rey was going to find him. We dont know if Luke was expecting her like Yoda was expecting Luke. It also seems like Rey is much further along in her abilities than Luke was at that point. The movie is most likely opening with them. There are enough differences to keep it fresh.
As for AT-ATs... again, any battle involving them is almost going to seem like redux.
ESB was always my favorite. I wouldnt be horribly upset if they borrowed themes from it.
People complain that TFA was ANH remade. Well its about a young person (Luke/Rey) finding their connection to the force and using it in the end to help defeat an enemy (Death Star/Kylo) with a vague bad guy hovering over the backdrop (Darth Sidious/Snoke), of course its going to be similar.
Its Star Wars, its always going to be similar with borrowed themes and ideas from movie to movie. Veer too much into left field and no one will be happy.
Episode 7 was a little too similar, starkiller base and all. But, ESB was great like you said, it's not going to make much of a difference to me if TLJ favors it in some ways. I just don't think they should go overboard with it like they did TFA. It's a whole, expansive universe. As a writer, you have a lot of different directions you could go.
