I'm back on my star watcher scolding tour.

Recruiting is about filling your needs with the best possible players for your team.

Defining best for your team and filling your team's needs does not necessarily mean you have to recruit the most talented players in the nation. Talent does not always translate to success on the field.

There have been numerous value denominators ascribed to talented players over the years, from blue-chips to star ratings. The good coaches don't need to see star ratings to evaluate talent. They evaluate talent in person and on film. They don't let some magazine recruiting guru's word dictate their livelihood. Of course, some coaches have and have lost their jobs because of it-(think Fulmer).

Now many coaches will use the magazine star ratings to strengthen their position among fans(think Fulmer). However, when your on the field results do not match up with the hype of the star ratings (think Fulmer), then the coach has to lean heavily on his recruiting ratings until fans have had enough and is eventually fired (think Fulmer).

Coaches know who the best talents are. The good coaches will also look for kids who are coachable, who are still growing and developing, and will fit into his system. That is just as important as the talent portion of the equation.

The beloved stars system is no guarantee to winning. Just look at the last classes of Fulmer. Look at Lane Kiffin's only class at UT. Look at how many of the "5 star" and "4 star" recruits who flopped on the field, quit the team, or were kicked off the team. You could field a "5 and 4 star" all-star team from that distinguished group of failures.

I've read many fans criticizing Derek Dooley for recruiting the kids that he has gotten commitments from because they are not "5 and 4 star" players. What those critical fans are not in on and don't understand is that the coaches know who fits their system, if they are a diamond in the rough because they are still developing their skills, or if they are coachable and team players. You are going to have to trust the coaches to make those decisions. I do trust Derek Dooley, just based on the way he processes information and makes decisions. He is definitely a astute and judicious person.

I have to shake my heads at those who want to criticize based on what some magazine guru sells them on.

if you look at the teams winning championships and their recruiting rankings you might think differently. No they don't all have to be 5* but you better be right up there with the big boys

I bet that this page will be no shorter than 10 pages, just given how all the other threads that say this exact same thing go.

Past National Champions:

2009 - Alabama
2008 - Florida
2007 - LSU
2006 - Florida
2005 - Texas

Past SEC Champions:
2009 - Alabama
2008 - Florida
2007 - LSU
2006 - Florida
2005 - Georgia

For as "overated and pointless" as recruiting rankings are, please tell me which of these programs that have won recent championships haven't recruited well on "paper" and have not had consistent Top 10 recruiting classes.

This. The majority of the posters on this site are in complete denial about our recruiting situation to begin with.

I just finished watching the highlight reels for Poole, Oku, and Williams. You watch the different films and tell me who you would pick out of the three for your team if you could only choose one.

I agree that 3 stars can turn into 1st day NFL draft picks, but when examining the chart which illustrates the percentages of 4/5 star players and championships, one must take into account that the SEC Championship is a far and above the more difficult championship game to qualify for than the ACC. (VA. TECH and their never ending string of 3-stars)

Alabama can be used as an example of a team with success without lots of 4/5 star players,(what was in the cupboard prior to Saban's first year) however as much as it pains some people to admit, Nick Saban is superior to most in the world of coaching college football.

With that being said, I agree that it cannot be all about Star gazing, however it does translate more time than not on the field. Unfortunately we (VOLS) have been the exception for whatever reason in the past few years.

SideBar: I suspect Bryce Brown has about the same type of a career where ever he plays as Lorenzo Booker did a FSU. You can measure a 40 time, but it's alot harder to gauge mental toughness.

+1. When you start seeing posts like this over and over and over again you know your program is not very good shape.

What came first stars or football recruiting?

Star ratings are the creation of football magazines designed to create an interest from fans so they would buy their magazines. Football recruiting has gone on long long before star ratings were created.

What was the reason for success with championship football teams before star ratings were created?

58 percent of the starting players from Alabama's national championship team last year were ranked at three starts or less when they were recruited.

The ones who are worst are the ones who are in denial of the situation our program is in right now and who expect us to compete on the recruiting trail with Bama, UF, UGA, LSU, and Auburn despite being in this situation.

People need to be realistic about this class.

You were one of the main "Chris Donald is gonna be a beast" posters when he Committed.

And?? He's one of the exceptions to the rule or recruiting services. He's a bust, so move on. BTW, I bet if I dug up one of your posts from back then, I would say you would have been riding that train too.

I see how things work around here now. I move on from things I say and change my thoughts and mind just like the rest of the world, but yet people around here still want to point out I was wrong. Wow, big freaking deal someone was wrong on a message board!! You want a freaking pat on the back?? Some kind of merit badge for pointing it out??

I'm not faulting you here man, just don't get into the mode where you want to be like every other jackhole on this site and do that crap. If you want me to say I am wrong, fine, just don't be an ass about it.

Derek Dooley is in a situation where he has to recruit kids with a lot of character. He is also in a position to have to recruit and build this team up the middle on both sides of the line. Once he is able to build his foundation with young men of character, who will be around in 3-4 years, he can look to reach out a bit more and take some risks on some kids with question marks about their character. Now, Dooley needs kids who will play within the rules of the program and are coachable.
