State of recruiting (split)

Getting our tail kicked so far in recruiting.

Tifwiw, but each of the last 2 weeks on his Big Orange Sunday show, Coach Doug Mathews has said...

1. 2017 recruiting is going very, if not extremely well.

2. That although we have only 8 commitments publicly, that the real number is closer to 12-13 at present

3. Has pointed out that all the current commits are from outside the state of Tennessee ..... seems to be implying something in particular when he says it, just hasn't specified exactly what he means by it

4. Said, without equivocation, that we will sign between 8 and 11 in-state players this cycle.

I'm certain some will discount this and criticize Mathews. However, he's in consistent contact with Bob Welton and a few of the coaches on staff. I'm finding it difficult to not be a little pessimistic about our class right now as well, but Mathews has provided a lot of spot on information over the last few years. Again, Tifwiw.

No, Mathews is generally well connected. I hope that is the case, I'm just simply trying to make the argument that what is known currently, it's worth being concerned.

Heard that as well the last two shows. Coach Mathews is probably as close if not closer to the program than anyone else on this board. He has also been there and done that.:)

Facts from insiders don't count in the doom and gloom contest. Get that ish outta here!

I agree. As I mentioned, I'm finding it very difficult to not go all Catbone at this point....things feel a little bleak, even though we're still 8+ months away from NSD '17. Just thought I'd share Doug's perspective to help maybe balance some things out and hopefully alleviate some angst.

I've not weighed in on the "state of recruiting" so far this cycle, but I'll make a couple of statements/questions:

Is recruiting in the '17 cycle as "on fire" as most would have hoped at this point? No, probably not.

Am I ready to launch the lifeboats in May? No, definitely not.

Lot of time to play out. Lot of games to play out.

Will we miss on some in state studs? Likely.
Will we hit on some out of state studs? Definitely.

At the end of the day, we're gonna be just fine.

Breathe, gentlemen.

Come on now RF during the summer should be nothing but doom and gloom until a commitment , but then the commitment must be questioned after that

Oh well..I wrote Stevens off a long time ago, so this is nothing new to me. Recruiting sucks this year so far. At least in contrast to what it was supposed to be. If they can just pull together a good class like last years by signing day, it will surprise me.

I have little doubt that we'll sign a very, very good 2017 class. Just may not look quite like we all thought it would.

Not foolish at all actually. We have no momentum with any top kids atp.

You keep thinking that cause you have no clue what you're talking about. They want to see us win this year on the field and we're going too. Recruiting will pick up when we win the East.

Lol. What happens if I have a clue what I'm talking about? Because there's really no way to prove otherwise til Jan.

The longer they "wait to see if we win," the longer other schools can swoop in and capture their interest.

Again, not saying this will happen. As of now, that is what's happening at the present.

Nailed it.

Now queue up the sunshine pumpers for the "long way until signing day" comments.

Okay Mr. Misery. What do you want us to do instead? Pout? Whine? Cry?

Unless you haven't gotten it by now as fans we have no control on what happens in recruiting. Neither do the coaches. Only the recruits do.

So instead of finding something to whine about, why don't you simply enjoy the buildup to what should be our best season in nearly a decade on the field?

It is entirely plausible to maybe get a top 10 class. As it stands, based off where recruits have us ranked in their top groups, we're looking at top 20

Okay.

So why not enjoy the potential championship season this year? rather than crying about our 2018 team being potentially terrible?

Man some of yall just love to find something to worry about.

In the face of so much positivity heading into potentially our best season in a decade you instead what to find something to whine about.

PATHETIC.

So what are you gonna do about it?

I swear this sort of mindset makes no sense to me.

Why worry about something you have no control over?

If recruiting is not going well so far, what good do you find in consistently revisiting it?

I guess I finally found out what it means to be a die-hard fan. It means someone who is predisposed to seek out misery. Cause I never heard someone tout their die-hard status while their team is winning.

Whining about recruiting ain't gonna change a damn thing.

So having a discussion about the status of recruiting in, ya know, the Recruiting Forum is frowned upon now?

Gotcha.

Signs of concern: reply to every post with a smartArse answer.

Another one? Desperate reach for validation. :). I need to assure you that I am megachill right now. This guy has been paying attention. Butch knows recruiting and you guys don't. Every shot taken at you freak out worrywart artists is for personal amusement. Keep pumping out the material and pretending that you have some insight borne from your miserable bunker. Next NSD I'll be enjoying the latest haul and you'll be whining about no commitments for 19. :cray: Concerned?

That's fine. I hope you're right. All I'm saying is that with where we are with top recruits we'll be looking at a top 20

Insert standard bignewt reply to those worrying in May.
Rest of post intentionally left blank
