Stats guys, was Justin Wilcox a good DC for us?

I seem to remember he was a promising, defensive coordinator, even though he was only here a year working for the overmatched Derek Dooley. He’s definitely on the hot seat at Cal. I’m guessing he’s a West Coast guy but it would be nice to get him back to Knoxville. We need help.
Best one in a long time Tennessee had here. West coast guy thou. I doubt he’d come back.

Was a big fan of his hire due to some of his defenses at Boise State…especially the upset of Chip Kelly’s first Oregon team. Not as impressed with his time in Knoxville as others. Always felt that ONE defensive play that could have been made that wins a significant game didn’t get made. And the loss against Kentucky and JOKER PHILLIPS is credited to Tyler Bray and Da’Rick not wanting to play a bowl game, but I noticed we got outscored by an already bad offense with a backup WR playing quarterback for the first time since high school. Nothing he’s done since leaving Knoxville screams upgrade imo.

has he stayed and we avoid the Sunseri experiment with a deep/experienced defense, we likely win 9-11 games with that offense.

Agree with that. At the time I thought we’d be 9-3 or 10-2 with him. In four of the SEC loses we scored 31, 35, 44, 48 (OT game).

Yup. Georgia and South Carolina games had zero defense. Even 2-3 stops in that game win it for us. Florida I vaguely remember because I was very thirsty pregame and had too much fun lol

In what role? We don't have an opening.

He didn't care much for Knoxville..

I hated it. Sit back and hope the offense makes a mistake. And Monty was worse. Eric Berry was going to destroy the interception return record, and Monty turned him into a glorified linebacker instead of a game changing, ball-hawking safety.

They lost that game 10-7 to UK. Safe to say the offense was mostly to blame for the loss.

He absolutely was a great DC here. He did more with less talent than anyone we've had in a long time. He would be a homerun hire if we could get him back, but.I seem to remember him wanting to be on the west coast. Now that very well could be lip service because he knew the SS Dooley was sinking fast and he wanted out...idk.

See my post earlier today comparing coaches since Fulmer.

Defense stats in ‘10 and ‘11 were bottom half for the SEC in almost all defensive categories. I would say “No”, Wilcox was not very good.

“Mostly” and acknowledged that with the comment about Bray, but to give up 10 to a team using a backup WR at QB? Didn’t scream defensive guru. Amid a pretty moribund season of defensive performance that only looked better when compared to Sal Sunseri’s crap.
