Stats guys, was Justin Wilcox a good DC for us?

I think Dooley was a good "manager", but he has his slip ups for sure. He was thrust in a position that he couldn't say no too... If you get offered the Tennessee job, you of course say yes in his position.... But he had solid coordinators those first two years... Bray's thumb injury screwed up that second year. I think had Bray and Hunter not gotten hurt, that is like a 8-4/9-3 year.

Dooley was dealt a lot of bad luck events, but he also didn't help himself either....
We were dealt the bad luck of hiring Dooley after Kiffin left us so late in the cycle.

Dooley was lazy and openly bragged about being home by supper every day.

By some mathematical miracle, he lost to Alabama by exactly 31 points 3 years in a row.

He's the only coach I can think of in UT's modern history that never had a winning season (no I'm not counting Cornbread's vacated wins).

I believe he once signed an entire recruiting class without a single offensive lineman.

He was clearly a boy in a man's job and he set our program back a half a decade.

Since the OP actually wanted stats, I thought I'd break some of this down. This is Wilcox (2010-2011), Jancek (2013-15), and Banks (21-23) along with the previous year for each, hinting at what they were taking over. I didn't want to get too out there, so it's just National Rank in points per game, yard per play (which helps reduce the bias inherent in total yards, i.e. teams with fast strike offenses tend to give up more total yards), and 3rd down conversion % (because it seems to be a favorite rant around here):

PPG YPP 3rd
(2009) 22.2 (37th) 27th 32nd
2010 25.1 (56th) 60th 54th
2011 22.6 (36th) 57th 57th

(2012) 35.7 (107th) 102nd 51st
2013 29.0 (79th) 100th 92nd
2014 24.2 (34th) 46th 16th
2015 20.0 (16th) 39th 2nd

(2020) 30.1 (69th) 76th 114th
2021 29.1 (90th) 52nd 101st
2022 22.8 (36th) 48th 32nd
2023 22.0 (39th) 29th 62nd

Keep in mind that a difference of .2 yards per play could easily move you 10 to 20 spots on the board, and 3rd down percentage is much the same. We were 62nd this year: with 5 more stops we're 43rd; and with 5 less stops we're 94th.
Same data by conference ranking (which I find more important):

.......... PPG YPP 3rd
(2009) 22.2 (6th) 6th 5th
2010 25.1 (9th) 9th 9th
2011 22.6 (9th) 9th 9th

(2012) 35.7 (12th) 14th 10th
2013 29.0 (10th) 11th 12th
2014 24.2 (9th) 8th 2nd
2015 20.0 (5th) 8th 1st

(2020) 30.1 (7th) 8th 12th
2021 29.1 (12th) 6th 13th
2022 22.8 (6th) 7th 5th
2023 22.0 (5th) 4th 8th

(Sorry about the formatting. Some day I'll learn to do tables.)
