I thought the rumor was he attacked Wilcox during a meeting. I vaguely remember him holding a press conference somewhere on campus after he got fired.IIRC he didn't mesh very well with Chuck Smith whom Dooley had brought in. Never quite understood what really happened except that Smith left under strange circumstances. I thought that there was a noticeable improvement to the DL when CS was coaching them.
has he stayed and we avoid the Sunseri experiment with a deep/experienced defense, we likely win 9-11 games with that offense.
After the first drive UK had about 150yds of offense. That loss wasn't on the defense it was the offense's attitude and turnovers“Mostly” and acknowledged that with the comment about Bray, but to give up 10 to a team using a backup WR at QB? Didn’t scream defensive guru. Amid a pretty moribund season of defensive performance that only looked better when compared to Sal Sunseri’s crap.
A strong defense doesn’t allow THAT offense to put up 10 points. If there was a pick 6 or int/fumble near their own goal line, that’d be different. That the “first drive” happened and an emergency QB only needed 150+ yards is the reason you can’t absolve the defense in that weak effort. Maybe the loss was MORE on the offense…not arguing that. But for the sake of fond nostalgia and bringing back the failed DC of a failed season..After the first drive UK had about 150yds of offense. Yep. Likely would've been a situation where despite Dooley's inability to coach, his coordinators would have bailed him out. IIRC that offense put up some numbers, but Sal's defense just gave up more than we scored.
I think Dooley was a good "manager", but he has his slip ups for sure. He was thrust in a position that he couldn't say no too... If you get offered the Tennessee job, you of course say yes in his position.... But he had solid coordinators those first two years... Bray's thumb injury screwed up that second year. I think had Bray and Hunter not gotten hurt, that is like a 8-4/9-3 year.
Dooley was dealt a lot of bad luck events, but he also didn't help himself either....
I completely agree. He was kind of a doofus with his quotes, but I don’t hate him. He was offered a premier job and he took it. A few things that pissed me off about him though, namely just “giving up” in the 2012 Mizzou game. The players reciprocated the following week by dogging the Vandy game and getting spanked by a half tier team. That and the 2011 Kentucky game. If you can’t motivate your team to NOT be the first team to lose to Kentucky in 20+ years something is wrong.
You are right that Dooley couldn't pass up the job, but I am still upset that they had Kippy Brown on staff and he wanted the job. I also know that Kippy was going to bring Carl Torbush as his defensive coordinator. They led Kippy on and said he was in the running and then Hamilton and Haslam went and interviewed/ hired Dooley on Friday night before they interviewed Kippy on Saturday. I truly believe we would have avoided the next 10 years if Hamilton had any sense about what was a coach.I think Dooley was a good "manager", but he has his slip ups for sure. The dubest decision of it all was not letting Cutcliffe bring his handpicked assistants with him who were already receiving some buyouts as they got fired with Fulmer..... Of course he was also going to be forced to keep some of Kiffin's guys. You are right that Dooley couldn't pass up the job, but I am still upset that they had Kippy Brown on staff and he wanted the job. Again how Hamilton thought he had the golden touch of hiring coaches and he knew he could get Cut to turn it down by saying that. He wanted to put his stamp on the athletic department and would not hire anybody that had history with Tennessee. He definately put his stamp on the athletic department (sooooooooo bad)The dubest decision of it all was not letting Cutcliffe bring his handpicked assistants with him who were already receiving some buyouts as they got fired with Fulmer..... I knew he was toast when we they had cameras in the locker room after the Eric Gordon pick 6 in OT. They celebrated and hoisted Dooley like we won the division or conference.
It was Vandy lol.
Also side note, I will never forget that game because they had the dumb camera angles for ESPN 3D they tried.
Thanks for the stats. AS CJH said, our goal is to field an elite defense. In those terms, the only one that sniffed a good defense was Jancek in 2015. The rest of these defensive rankings are garbage. Good riddance Banks, good luck at MTSU. Lets find a top 10 DC and roll. Go Vols!Since the OP actually wanted stats, I thought I'd break some of this down. This is Wilcox (2010-2011), Jancek (2013-15), and Banks (21-23) along with the previous year for each, hinting at what they were taking over. I didn't want to get too out there, so it's just National Rank in points per game, yard per play (which helps reduce the bias inherent in total yards, i.e. teams with fast strike offenses tend to give up more total yards), and 3rd down conversion % (because it seems to be a favorite rant around here):
PPG YPP 3rd
(2009) 22.2 (37th) 27th 32nd
2010 25.1 (56th) 60th 54th
2011 22.6 (36th) 57th 57th
(2012) 35.7 (107th) 102nd 51st
2013 29.0 (79th) 100th 92nd
2014 24.2 (34th) 46th 16th
2015 20.0 (16th) 39th 2nd
(2020) 30.1 (69th) 76th 114th
2021 29.1 (90th) 52nd 101st
2022 22.8 (36th) 48th 32nd
2023 22.0 (39th) 29th 62nd
Keep in mind that a difference of .2 yards per play could easily move you 10 to 20 spots on the board, and 3rd down percentage is much the same. We were 62nd this year: with 5 more stops we're 43rd; and with 5 less stops we're 94th.
I remember that. Dude (Smith) had a press conference outside Neyland and through the gibberish, kept alluding to promising kids extra benefits.IIRC he didn't mesh very well with Chuck Smith whom Dooley had brought in. Never quite understood what really happened except that Smith left under strange circumstances. I thought that there was a noticeable improvement to the DL when CS was coaching them.
