Status of Coach Willie Martinez

When DB is trying to catch up with the faster receiver, he's jut trying to keep as close as he can, doesn't have an opportunity to turn their head around. Hopefully the new ones coming in are a step or two faster. And giving credit where credit is due, think of how much Hadden improved from 2022 to 23.

I like to occasionally visit and browse through message boards of various different teams, both college and NFL. One thing I’ve noticed is that nearly every fanbase of teams with struggling defenses complains about their DBs not turning their heads around while the ball is on the way. It makes me wonder if the techniques currently being taught to defensive backs are different than what people are used to in the past.

I've had several DB coaches, college level, tell me many times if the DBs take their eye off a receiver they will be 5 yards behind them in a second. The speed of receivers is too great. Most teach then to watch the player and read him for when ball may be arriving to turn for it. I imagine not the easiest skill to learn. Most DBs are also giving up size to WRs now days. Easier for WRs to bump them away.

The really good DBs are very athletic. Not so much physical, some are, but really fast and fluid in the hips. They are able to handle press coverage and be able to turn for ball. I imagine if you count them, majority of interceptions happen by DBs that are watching the QB and not running with a WR.

Passing games have evolved to be so much more complicated and efficient in the last 25 years that I don't know how anybody really excels at Cornerback. Nobody really shuts anybody down without a really good pass rush making it hard on the QB.

I have not counted them but I think you are correct…most interceptions come from help. Man to man coverage seems more likely to yield no-throws or pass breakups than interceptions.

I believe final decision on all staffing should be run past a 99-member panel of Vol Nation members to approve or reject Heupel's recommendation.

Only requirements are that no panel member can ever have played football before, and all supporting information must be hearsay. Also, we need to debate it for at least 20 pages, even if we all agree from the outset (unlikely, admittedly).

I think this will really help our program.
Sounds reasonable.

Are you volunteering to chair the committee by making this post ?

I get it. You have this belief that our coaching staff can do no wrong. While I will fully admit everyone on our staff has for gotten more football then I will ever know, I have two eyes and ears. I can read stats. I can watch our DBs routinely miss tackles, be out of position, be terrible at fundamentals and get torched. You obviously cannot. The secondary has been bad since Martinez took over.

If you can’t see that Martinez isn’t a good coach then I don’t know what to tell you. Plenty of head coaches evaluate their staff and replace them. Kelly and Napier have done it. Saban and Smart have done it. In my opinion, which is no better than yours, it’s a red flag that Heupel refuses to at least TRY and upgrade some position coaches. You can disagree or agree. Frankly I don’t care. But my opinion on this matter hasn’t hurt nor helped this team.
No, nobody I have seen has defended the play on the field. Did we just see 7 or 8 guys he inherited hit the portal above those whose eligibility ran out?

CJH being able to lure QB RB &WR as an offensive guru those first two classes makes sense, RG getting some DL too, but what was the allure on defensive skill guys with the NCAA hammer those years?

Doubt CWM was given the permission to do a low class Deion purge on his room upon arrival to give them a legitimate shot. Folks are also assuming they were following his instructions in coverage or were capable of more than they did. The fact they hit the portal is a fact. The rest not so much.

This^^^^^

What do we teach running backs when they break into the open field?? Don't look back it slows you down. So when a DB is burned at the LOS he doesn't have the option to look back he is playing catch up. His best hope at that point is to strip the ball or make the tackle.

We have been consistently bad in the secondary. We were bad in his first stint here. Ask GA fans if they thought he did a good when he was there. As far as being a great recruiter???? How, who? Who are the phenomenal dbs he's bringing in?

I don't think the techniques have changed. At least, not that drastically.

I think BigPoppa explained what you're seeing, here:

It can be as simple as this: when you see a lot of kids not turning their heads, that probably means they're playing catch-up.

Waaaay simplified, what is normally coached goes something like this: (a) stay on his hip (b) if he gets away from you, get back to him (c) if you're in good position and he turns, you turn too, find the ball, and intercept (d) if you can't intercept, knock it out of his hands before it counts as a catch (e) if he makes the catch, strip the ball and get the fumble (f) if you can't strip it, tackle him. [some coaches do not emphasize (e), but go directly from (d) to (f)]

In other words, you're seeing our coverage break down at step (b) too often. We need more speed. Not different coaching.

Go Vols!
Why is this so hard for the average fan to understand?? We are getting beat because we don't have the speed in the secondary to cover SEC WR's.

He was fired by his lifetime best friend and college roommate. That’s all we need to know.

Would just change one word.

Didn't.

Didn't have the speed. We might now.

Let's see how 2024 goes.

Go Vols!
Yes Gibson, Thomas, Matthews and McCoy all appear to have what it takes and Carter by all reports stood out in bowl preparations.

I said earlier this is where the rubber meets the road. WM will either coach them up or it will be time to move on.

If they suck again, it's all on Heupel. He seems determined to make zero adjustments to his staff.

He's always been a tough one to figure out. It seems like he's been much maligned, but he's obviously well thought of or he wouldn't have gotten jobs here, UGA, Oklahoma and Auburn.

....or simply watch each of the last season's games against top SEC talent and make your decision.

In zone you read the QB and react in your zone....In man you read your receiver. You do not run down the field with your head turned to the QB...You read your man and react to his actions for the ball. Letting your man catch the ball while never looking for the ball to avoid your man to freely catch it is bad football....Our problems for several years our DBs are so slow they are too busy catching up to the receiver and not in position to turn and make a play on the ball. Our DBs are tacklers AFTER the receivers catch the ball...We hope they tackle.

Hopefully things are changing...Please.

$5M a year coaches should always be making smart off-season moves. Huepel? Hummm..........

I just wonder who will be the SEC program to leverage most from the coaching change at Alabama?
