Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA)

1. SOPA was overly broad and poorly worded. Terrible bill.

2. It was not merely about downloading pirated content but also about shutting down foreign websites that sell counterfeit goods (big problem and clearly hurts the US economy).

3. Get ready for the Open Act. Currently has support from Google, AOL, eBay, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Mozilla, Yahoo!, and Zynga

I don't know enough about it yet to be in favor or against it, but I thought this was a good article to introduce me to the big picture.

The OPEN Act: significantly flawed, but more salvageable than SOPA/PROTECT-IP

Pretty good article. Generally agree with most of it but the last section which is not surprising considering it is written by a law professor.

Also, imo he is incorrect with this assertion - "OPEN replicates one of SOPA's sins. If a player is engaged in legitimate and illegitimate activity and its money supply is cut off, both activities go down the tubes." He even recognized the part that solves this problem in giving the definition of a rogue website which requires that the website "has only limited purpose or use other than engaging in infringing activity and whose owner or operator primarily uses the site to willfully engage in infringing activity."

Although "primarily" should probably be changed to "substantially." If a website's main purpose is to traffic infringing goods, it should be considered a rogue website even if it sells a small amount of legal goods. Otherwise, they would offer a couple of legal products just to exclude themselves from the law.

In addition to reddit, Wikipedia is now having a protest blackout.

Wikipedia's will be from midnight tonight until midnight tomorrow night, and reddit's will run tomorrow from 8 am to 8 pm (I believe).

Rand Paul had a FB status blasting SOPA. His rant contained a typo, and his next status claimed the missing "s" had been censored. LOL
