Stranger Things

Just finished the new season. Wife and I loved every bit of it. The new darker vibe this season had was right on the money I thought. Luckily we only have to wait 5 more weeks for the second volume of season 4. There’s only 2 episodes though and look at these run times:

“The two episodes in Volume 2 will keep that same energy: Episode 8 is going to be 1 hour and 25 minutes, and the Episode 9 finale will be a staggering 2 hours and 30 minutes.”

Agreed. I think they've done a great job of growing the show as the characters age. Harry Potter books/movies did this as well.

Guessed the big reveal early on but still loved it.

Have to agree, really enjoyed the tie in back to the beginning. I just wish we had seen more of that in the earlier seasons so it wouldn't feel so much like a S4 only thing.

Just finished season 4. I’ve been bitter about it being 3+ years since the previous season was released. I know the pandemic had a lot to do with it. I forgot a lot of the character names and what even happened in season 3. That being said, season 4 has been the best season yet, atleast since season 1. I love the switch to more horror and gore.

Finally got my wife caught up and started Season 4 last night.

Initial thoughts:

Yeah they don’t look like Freshmen. And the seniors look like 30 year olds 😂. But I can get past it because it’s written well.

Damn kids are mean and I can’t wait for little Barbie girl to get her comeuppance when Elle’s powers return.

The dynamic of friendships changing has been good across each season. Lucas’ attempt to move up the social ladder while Mike and Dustin just kinda accept their station and revel in it. This might be the most interesting Max has been in her 3 seasons. One thing I have a hard time getting past though, their shared trauma and secrets would probably hold them together a little more than the average kids.

I appreciated the direct nod to Nightmare on Elm Street.

Good for her! She’s probably made about 15¢ off me from Spotify this week 😂😂

One more season of Stranger Things. This season was fantastic and I just don’t see how they will top it.

On episode six. Digging the Clockwork Orange vibes from the lab attendant. Have some theories, but I’ll watch and see what happens

I don’t either, this was the best season imo and they really tied everything up and everything came full circle. It probaly should’ve ended with this season but they left a couple of loose ends around so season 5 here we come lol, but this season will be hard to top.

the LOTR reference was chef's kiss. And a big F*** you to Peter Jackson's biggest screw up

This was a great season. The final two episodes were a bit of a let down. They play it way too safe with main characters. I never feel any sense of suspense at all, because I have learned they will not kill off a main character. Also, the epic fight that got hyped up between El and Vecna ended up being literally two shoves back and forth over the span of a few seconds. Some great visuals and sound design. Just left a lot in the table to me. They made that last episode nearly 2.5 hours long, and 30 minutes of it was just them reuniting in the cabin and talking. This was after an anticlimactic fight. I definitely felt let down at that point.

I find will to be really annoying in general now. The only thing he does anymore is cry. I hated that max didn’t die, again. She gets all mangled up this time, gets a “mourn her death” scene, but then 11 decides she can resurrect people now. Felt cheap. Long episodes but they felt like a lot of filler, and as you said the battle against vecna was kind of meh.

I still have Vol 2 left but I was thinking about what this show does great is juggle the large cast and their split adventures.

I look back on shows like Lost and The Walking Dead that would spend full episodes on one group from the show, then finish with a cliffhanger and not get back to them for 2-3 more episodes.

This season they had the Hawkins kids, the CA kids (then even broke that up with El’s journey), Joyce and Murray, and Hopper’s story… not to mention the Hawkins police and the jocks getting their fair share. But pretty much every episode touches on all of them and keeps the story moving forward.

I was falling asleep TBH.

I'm a fan of the show because the good is so good (visually, the imagination of it all, the 80s nostalgia, over-arching plot), but the components that aren't good (casting, acting, dialog, small details of the story, action, etc.) are really, really bad. I'm so glad we got two stoner pizza guys, because the one was just so damn funny.

If this were an HBO-level premium show Will, Mike, or Lucas would have died a long time ago, and they probably would have killed Dusty at the break here in season 4. Like you say, there is no real suspense ever. Not only are they not going to die, I'm not even sure I would care if they do because I don't like any of them except Max and Dusty.

I have a feeling a few of them will be killed off. The kid that plays Will is the worst actor of the bunch. I think they’ve realized that and reduced his role significantly this season. I don’t see an outcome with a happy ending for this show. They will have to kill off some of the characters to make it worthwhile considering the direction in which they took the series, because it’s just too dark at this point to have a happy ending.

But doing it at the end of the story doesn't accomplish the same thing, in my opinion. Kill Lucas or Mike (not Will because nobody gives a damn about Will) in season 2 and make it really painful for the audience. Then the rest of the run of the show has the audience worrying about who else they will kill.

Game of Thrones is the classic example. Nobody was happy at the end of season 1, but it set the tone for the entire story. Nobody is safe and you literally fear for the lives of your favorite characters. Any week, somebody you love could go down.

I think Game of Thrones was popular because everyone was waiting to see which character got naked next.

I liked it but if I'm honest the build up to the last 2 episodes was a tad bit of a letdown. Maybe not a total letdown but somewhat. And I agree about the stakes with the main characters.

Honestly having Eddie die was way too predictible and having Max somehow survive because suddenly El has healing powers was a bit.....bulls***. Granted she isn't in great shape but come on.

What happened to the girl at the end I thought she was gone then not then El was in her mind and it was all black. I took that as mind dead . What's up?

Ever since she was introduced, Max has been my favorite as well.
