Strike Two, Kentucky...

Tubby's race certainly didn't help endear him to the fan base. I do think, however, the main factor was the rediculous expectation that UK would win 2 out of 3 national championships and make the final four almost every year, as they had in the last days of Pitino.

The success UK had under Pitino is exceptionally rare; I would bet that Rick himself doubted it could be repeated when he left. Kentucky fans forgot that. They forgot that it had been nearly two decades between national championships before they appeared in the finals 3 consecutive times. They expect that kind of success from their coaches, and they figure that if the program isn't duplicating that success, the coach must not be doing his job.

Please note that in the above discussion, I have credited Tubby's national championship to Pitino. That opinion is not mine, but that of the big blue nation.

That is 100% correct Cman.

They certainly are not the only ones. Frat boys are typically sheep, and I promise you everyone of them using the N word also has black friends. They just have to look cool in front of their brothers. There That is not the case for people who were actually raised in segregated schools.

I know the stigma that follows us around, but in my experience, most people in general are sheep. Do not limit us, as I was merely using this as an example. My point was that many people who are successful in the South will, consciously or not, hold whites on a higher platform than blacks. It's reality and it is getting better, but there are many not in frats that hold the same believe as well.

Nothing against you personally... But I find most frat boys to be sheepish. Full A&F wardrobe with a can of Coors Light in hand, that type of thing.

Understood. I wasn't trying to step on toes, just making the case that those frat guys making fun of your frat would do or say anything to look cool in front of their friends. While in fact they have several equal social relationships with black people.

I agree that successful people all over the states will hold themselves on a higher platform than blacks, and others (including rednecks and mexicans) because they honestly think there poop doesn't stink. To them their lives are much more valuable than others. It is one of the crappy things about human nature.

Haha you bring up A&F, and many guys I know say that those guys are simply posers because they aren't wearing Brooks Brothers or Polo.

And I hate Coors personally. Give me a Bud any day.

It is very similar to the situation at USC right now. They will not have the program rolling like this forever; nobody does. I do not envy the man who follows Pete Carroll, assuming he leaves while still on top. Add to that history is the pressure of every person in the state from toddler to grandmother rabidly following the team and you have Kentucky basketball.

Like I said, I know the stigma, and I also understand that there are many who give us a bad name. Hell, my girlfriend has a 4.0 in the honors program here and makes fun of me for being a "frat boy". I'm not going to try to defend our kind or prove another point.

Fact is, there are 20 frats here, some good some bad, I personally think we are top 5, but that's besides the point. Every group has someone who is ignorant and we are the same way- it's just we are a part of a group people can make generalizations on. You can't lump "GDIs" together since there are about 20,000 of them here.

I meant preppy clothing in general. And you can taste the difference between Coors and Bud...?

West coast fans are not like those in the South. If USC football declines after Pete Carroll leaves, people in LA will simply move on to something else until somebody brings USC football back to prominence. That is one big advantage about trying to build a college program on the west coast, a coach always has ample time to try and achieve something.

Exactly. If a major sports program sucks at something in the south, a mob will run anybody who had anything to do with it out of town. On the west coast, people will simply find something else to do.

Theres just more to do in LA. At UK all there is is basketball. Used to be here all there was was Football.

I agree, but it was the closes comparison to the end of Pitino's tenure I could think of on short notice.

Look at the number of basketball coaches UCLA has gone through since Wooden and the number of football coaches USC went through between the end of John Robinson's first tenure and the arrival of Pete Carroll. Those numbers do not exactly reflect a great deal of patience.

I know we've discussed this numerous times...but, who does UK target now?

I think Jay Wright's a good coach, and has that polished Riley/Pitino/Donovan look that UK likes so much.

Tom Izzo is fantastic...I can't believe they targeted Barnes before TI.

Tom Crean? I think he's a bad fit.

Mark Few? Leaving tiny Gonzaga for the massive expectations of Kentucky - recipe for diaster.

I think Jay Wright is the right guy, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I love Billy Gilespie for the next big hire or for the next run at the NC.

I never said they weren't pressure-free. But UCLA basketball and USC football are nowhere near as high-pressure as say, Alabama football or Kentucky basketball.

If you walked around Knoxville and polled every person in preppy clothing, I bet less than half would be Greek.

I think I recall Carson Palmer saying he played in an empty stadium for his first three years. Fans in the South are intolerant of poor coaching, but they'll still attend games.

Have you ever been to the LA Coliseum? I'd have a hard time going to that dump to see a mediocre team, too.

Which I've always said isn't really a badge of honor for Southern fans. It's like continually going to a restaurant with crappy food. At some point, you should realize you're just enabling the incompetence. Larry Coker would still be the coach at the "U" if their fans hadn't completely abandoned the OB at midseason this year.

The only thing worse than the Coliseum was the LA Sports Arena next door. It's amazing that USC ever got anyone to come play hoops in that hellhole.
