This seems to be a common theme on this site, so why not have a thread about it? That way we don't have to have an individual thread every time some politician says something unquestionably stupid.

I'll start:

Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.) — representing the district where this blogger grew up — appeared to be a bit confused about her own borough’s history in an appearance on “The Colbert Report” Tuesday night.

Asked by Stephen Colbert what she would tell Brooklynites if she went back in time to 1898 (when Brooklyn joined New York City, a decision some Brooklynites still consider the “Great Mistake”), Clarke said she would ask to end slavery.

“I didn’t realize there was slavery in Brooklyn in 1898,” Colbert deadpanned. “I’m pretty sure there was,” Clarke responded. “It sounds like a horrible part of the United States that kept slavery going until 1898,” Colbert joked.

I watched that last night. Jaw-dropping. Called my friend in Brooklyn to start making fun of him.

it even got better

But Colbert kept going, asking, “Who would be enslaving you in 1898 in New York?”
Still not finished, Clarke responded, “The Dutch.”
“Those sneaky Dutch bastards,” Colbert said.
Clarke responded, “Exactly.”

why do people want to surrender power to people like this?

Nobody wants to surrender power. But most people I know don't want to go back to the bush era. Romney = bush but with a teapublican as a running mate. Oh well,,,we're gonna have 4 more years of Obama,,not a bad thing. The bad thing is 4 more years of an idiotic congress.

Yeah they do. They practically beg for it.

I didn't realize my ancestors were sneaky bastards who continued to enslave people in Brooklyn through 1898. I guess I learn something new everyday.

On a more serious note, people wonder why this country is in the tank. This is a prime example. Forget Obama and Romney, she is the epitome of what is wrong with America.

On another note, why play the race/slavery card if you have no f***ing clue about the history of slavery?

Because it works. There are people even more stupid than her who listen nd believe the ****. How else do you think she got elected?

I agree. Education is the glaring problem in America. Too many ignorant and stupid people.

Shocking considering the teachers unions and the prevailing political affiliation of those in the profession

I didn't know it was possible to be so wrong twice in the same post.

Most people can tell you all of the contestants names over the last 5 seasons of Big Brother or tell you who won the last 10 American Idols before they can tell you who the last 3 POTUS were...

Oh well. I'm just trying to hang on for about 10-15 more years.

So the answer is to essentially punish teachers, drive the quality ones out, basically privatize the system, and make the field less attractive to potential future teachers than it already is?

Yep, that'll get er done!

I don't think you know what you are talking about. The union drives out the quality teachers by not allowing merit pay. People that would have been great teachers go into another field because they don't want to get paid the same as ****ty teachers.

And how do you base the Merit pay Sherlock? The terrific standardized tests that have be just so very great?

You have to allow teachers to teach. Right now you are promoting politicians teaching, super idea.

I don't want government involved in education, and as long as it is we will have politicians controlling what's taught in classrooms. Ironically you probably do want government involved so you would be the one "promoting politicians teaching".

How about you give raises to teachers that are popular among the customers (AKA parents of students), and fire teachers that are extremely unpopular?

There's no IQ test to be in Congress. If you have $$/connections and can repeat party talking points, you can get elected.

See the "legitimate rape" guy who has been on the House science and technology committee for half a dozen years.
