how many ways do I have to tell you that they aren't holding you hostage. If you're struggling with idiomatic speech, take a class. If you're too senseless to understand how the unions cost us a fortune, please just keep paying taxes and quit voting.
Sounds to me like he's playing the victim. Maybe I'm interpreting wrong.
I certainly don't ever feel like I'm held hostage by unions, in fact I think that is borderline insanity.

I will tell you, however, that if you get out of the machinists union and stop turning screws for $12 / hour, you might be able to fly outside the state lines on a bankrupt carrier. It's sweet.

Unions (in manufacturing) have probably outlived their usefulness and because capital is so mobile now and some states are right-to-work states they are only hurting themselves.
That said, jobs leaving for overseas is the natural progression of things, advanced economies should transition to the service industry. Britain used to be the textile manufacturing capitol of the world - thankfully for them lesser developed economies handle most if that now.
