No, unfortunately the Spartanburgers didn’t make it. The government’s unfulfilled promises of improvements to Duncan Park really hurt because they couldn’t sell seats in most of the stadium.Does my city still have their club in that league? (Spartanburg, SC). I haven’t heard anything about it
I once was at a city council meeting (for college extra credit) when they discussed renovating duncan park. I decided to speak up and advocate tearing it down and building a new park. No, unfortunately the Spartanburgers didn’t make it. I regularly see Spartanburgers fans in Forest City because the two are fairly close. You should come on to an Owls game
For those who don’t know about it, Duncan Park is almost 100 years old, and has some seats from Shibe Park, former home of the Philadelphia A’s : Duncan Park - Wikipedia
Zander is staying with a host family. He seems to be enjoying it. Except the all important, not being close to a Chick-fil-A. The horror. My guess is most kids would have that arrangement. I know the Connells host some boys.I may have asked this before, but do the summer league guys stay with host families or some other arrangement?
The team did some improvements, and the playing surface looked pretty good. They added a nice picnic area in the right field area. Without the city making the promised improvements to the public areas it made it impossible to not lose lots of money. I’d estimate 85% or more of the seats could not be used. There was no kitchen or food prep area. We kicked the tires a little but it wasn’t worth it. It has possibilities, but it needs help. Since the city is getting a minor league team to relocate to Spartanburg a new stadium is coming.I once was at a city council meeting (for college extra credit) when they discussed renovating duncan park. The city planner got irate with me over it, claiming that they will fix it within the year. This was in 2018.
Spartanburg High played there when I was in high school. They have a new campus now, so idk if that’s still the case. But I always hated playing at that dump from Rec league all the way through high school. My dad and uncles echo my sentiments.
I was thinking it would be neat to schedule a game between the Macon Bacon and the Montgomery Biscuits....like when the baseball Vols played the Smokies.College baseball players generally play in summer ball leagues throughout the country. It is a valuable opportunity to gain additional experience, particularly for those players who may not be regular starters. The Forest City Owls are a summer ball team in the Coastal Plain League who play in Forest City, NC. Our own esteemed RBFJr is one of those in charge of the team. Many UT players have played for the Owls over the summer (i.e., Kirby, Redmond, etc.). Summer Ball also offers fans an opportunity to continue to watch players progress, and therefore we track summer ball assignments of different BaseVol players in this thread.
We have host families. We’re thankful for the Connells and people like them.Zander is staying with a host family. He seems to be enjoying it. The new stadium will be downtown.. how they have room for it, I have no idea. But it’s a Single A club so I doubt it’ll be anything crazy. I am looking forward to it though. The team did some improvements, and the playing surface looked pretty good. They added a nice picnic area in the right field area. A lot of host families love their ’summer sons.’The boy needs his chicken fix! lol
I bet its a ton of fun for them! If my parents move permanently to the lake where its closer to the summer league teams, I'll mention to them about hosting. They'd love it.
My mom LIVES to feed people. She'd get a kick out of being back in the game (for a few weeks) of trying to feed "big kids" all the time. It does help she's an excellent southern cook. She's the one that loves baseball too, so she'd be even happier to have another team to follow with 'her boys'.
Vols return a lot in terms of arms (Beam, Russell, Combs, Kirby, Sechrist) but they also have a TON of great talent that is either incoming or either redshirted or played very sparingly last year (Causey, Snead, Garcia, Sloop, Hunley, Behnke, Dallas, Sharp, Schaefer, Loy, Thacker)Nice, long write up about the Coastal Plain League All Star Game by Aaron Fitt at d1baseball.com
Lede photo for the article is JJ Garcia (photo credit to Fitt as well). Here’s the beginning of the article and part about him.

Well with Holman more than likely LSU, Galanie to the draft, and Denton maybe coming back. Say team look like this.
C: Peebles
1st:Burke
2nd: Denton
SS: Moore (easily could be outfield or 2nd if Denton is gone)
3rd: Amick
OF: Drieling
OF: Ensley
OF: Tears/Chapman
Dh: rotation of Tears, Bargo, Backus (need a rh bat)
Starting Rotation:
Fri: Beam
Sat: Russell
Sunday: Dallas or Evans
Bullpen: Either or of Dallas/Evans, Causey, Snead, Combs (he is back right?), Hunley, Zechriest, Hunter Sloop (sleeper for Sunday role imo, highly touted out of high school.
Overall, top 5 team in America that is on the short list to win it all.
Would be nice for UT to mix in a LHP as the third weekend starter. If healthy, Evans is the best option for that I believe.Vols return a lot in terms of arms (Beam, Russell, Combs, Kirby, Sechrist) but they also have a TON of great talent that is either incoming or either redshirted or played very sparingly last year (Causey, Snead, Garcia, Sloop, Hunley, Behnke, Dallas, Sharp, Schaefer, Loy, Thacker)
Also the wildcard is Wyatt evans. Heard some iffy things but if he’s right and healthy he’s a big time talent.
Pitching will never be an issue as long as Frank and Tony are around
I’m glad he’s had a good time. One good thing about summer ball is meeting people from all over.Stil no. They did bring it in for the team sometimes. He really enjoyed his time there and made new friends from all over the country. Tonight he was in the announcers booth during game 1 for a couple innings. He is such a natural.
