Sundays are the worst....

I dunno about that. But I would take Asian business men any day of the week and twice on sunday over any other race or gender.

I am of the conclusion that you can't tell anything about a person based on what they tip.

I tend to agree with Ducreux's post above.

To me this topic is not just about tipping but general rudeness. It's one thing to leave a crummy tip, its another to leave notes like "10% is good enough for God so its good enough for you."

Does that happen often?

I never had a specific story of that caliber happen but Sunday was notorious for the rudest and most demanding group of customers. I used to joke that they just spent an hour being told why they are going to hell and taking it out on us.

To be fair we also had Sunday regulars who were pleasant. It was just a handful that ruined the entire day.

You can go to the site and read some of the stories. Its obviously bad enough that a church decided to take action to change the perception.

whats so bad about drinking Water?

I guess the food service industry labels you as el cheapo if you order water. Pretty judgmental. It's all I ever order...oh, and coffee.

And keep that lemon out...I saw the Dateline special.

Lots of guessing going on up in here. :p

My guess is these are the same types of folks that I dealt with in the 90's when I was a bartender. They look at it like the server is getting paid an hourly wage, so why tip? Little did they know or care that I survived on tips. The hourly wage was minimum.
What made it worse was I worked in a casino and the drinks were free and they still wouldn't cough up a lousy dollar for a tip.
Oh, and yes these were people coming to a casino on Sunday afternoons after church. Lol!

for me the worst part was when the shift changed. It always seemed at least 1-2 larger tables had to be taken at the end or transferred (most servers declined the transfer though)
Nowadays all work is performance based....employers should formulate a policy/procedure to address how to compensate employees based on their performance and value to the company the way other kinds of business do.....

lots of businesses pay on commission. Servers are given better nights and sections based on their performance and value

Good thing it rarely, if ever, happens. Even the author of that post has "never had a specific story of that caliber happen".

It does happen. There was a well publicized story about a year ago where an Applebees server was fired after tweeting the reciept with the message inscrided on the tip line. There is a thread it in this very forum about it.

Have you ever worked in food service?

Honestly, it isn't only about the water. It's all I drink as well. Water is an indicator of what I could expect from the table. Water + lemons + many empty sugar packets = cheapskate. Let's face it, lemonade made this way at the table tastes nasty. The server knows this person is likely concerned about cost over quality or service. Others will order water but try to steal a sprite or club soda when it's time for the refill. On the flip side, i never had a problem with a guest who orders water and doesn't give off other cheapo indicators.

servers make money with larger bills, table turnover, effecient and courteous service to the guests.

Want to correct a previous post I made in this thread. I said asian business men would be my preferance as guests. That's not true. Waiting on others in the foodservice and hospitality industries is he absolute best for money made per shift.

Very true.
The absolute best tips I ever made were from the bar staff from another casino that would sit at my bar when their shift ended.

I'll never get why people want to be morons with someone handling their food.

I never waited tables, but did work in the kitchen, so I do my damnedest to tip well.

And, if there's a restaurant we visit fairly regularly and we get great service, I'll do my best to return to their section and continue to tip them well. I've found that if I keep tipping well, the money evens out and I'd much rather it go to the server anyway.

The cheapskates would be surprised how many times the soft drinks get left off your check, and salads/apps/etc just show up at your table when the server knows you'll take care of them.

So true. Regulars, even ones that didnt routinely tip 20% or more but were just relaxed, fun , etc., always got preferential treatment.

Oops, the bartender made the wrong drink. here ya go, regulars. Oops, forgot to ring that salad or soft drink. Here's this desert for you on the house.

It's rare enough that, when it does happen, it makes the news.

When I was in high school I washed dishes at a lodge (and enjoyed it). I've never worked as wait staff. I tip 20% and round up to the nearest dollar.

I order water for one reason...I'm fat enough without the soda. Haven't had a soda in 2 years.

I also regularly attend church, though Sunday lunch is always spent with my family at home. Sunday dinner is usually with a small group at the local Zaxbys, if we go out (kids have school in the morning).

I also enjoy long walks on the beach, playing my dulcimers (mountain AND hammer), snow skiing and UT sports.

Just kidding about the beach...I'm a mountain man.
