Sundays are the worst....

I worked at Chilis, Champs' and Texas Roadhouse . The after church crowds were the worst. I had a 6 top once where they put a $50 bill under the sugar ramekin. However, when I turned it over , it said "disappointed? With God you won't be." Then the name of their church. I almost got fired after my outburst from that. It still makes my blood boil.

Pretty crappy thing to do. What makes that church think anyone would want to come there for worship and fellowship when you treat total strangers like that?

I tip 20% for an average sit down experience. I’ll bump it to around 30 if it’s good service. It takes really bad service to do not get 15%. I never worked a restaurant, but friends have. Everyone has bad days and I try to remember that. Prepping my to go order is still a bit of a hassle, so I usually do at least ten percent. I rarely go to places with designated to go spots. It’s typically either done through the bar or by hostesses. I know they’re going out of their way, so they deserve at least something.

the question is did the person assembling the to go order for $735 report to the government that 8% of it ($58.80) was received as tips and was taxed on that amount.

If so then the employee has a legitimate gripe

If not, the employee can stfu. They've been getting tips without reporting them to the govt.

:cray: and the living wage myth pops up

Don't like it then get a job without tips. It's one of the few jobs where working harder and better can increase your wages daily.

Unless you get a table full of Christians...

Living wage isn't a myth, either. Pay the employees what they're worth; charge the customers what the meal and service is worth. Leave no chance for someone to get boned over. Do the cooks or dishwashers get paid more when they have to prepare more food at peak hours or close the restaurant only to come in not even 8 hours later to re-open? No... Is this just another case of people in the US not wanting to adopt the world model? Sounds like it...

Actually the opposite. Having the customer there to sell alcohol to and to upsale is where they profit most. The to go boxes, utensils, bags, cups/tops/straws etc. are really expensive.

Employess and equipment are already there.

You aren't kidding. I've seen invoices from CBI (Chaney Bros) and it's amazing how much that stuff costs.

I'd be curious to know where most people think that tip money from to go orders goes.

I thought it went into a tip pool. But I have no idea.

Yes it was. I believe they kept any tips and we only tipped out bartenders at the end of the night

My last restaurant job was at Calhoun's when I was in college. I remember the hostesses taking ToGo orders, as well.

If the order is taken by a server then doesn't the server have to claim those sales towards their total which increases the amount of tips they must claim?

You see, these are the types of nuances and topics that most people that don't or never have worked in the service industry even know about. Unfortunately, they probably don't care about them, either.

Overall waitress service at low to medium priced restaurant is horrific anyway.I really am not interested in ordering as soon as I’m sitting down and never see the waiter or waitress again until my check comes no thank you That is why I refuse to eat at places like Applebee’s, Ruby Tuesday’s or Chili’s the service is absolutely terrible

Lulz. They're probably doing a to go order.

Tough to answer, like Doozer said it depends on the restaurant. In my restaurants whoever rang the order in (sales under their name) were responsible for making sure it was completed and delivered, so they kept the tip. If a manager took care of it, the tip, if there was one, went to the tip pool.

Doozer, obviously you're correct on it depends on the restaurant, but I still wonder where most think it goes.

If you get a to go order from Chili's and tip, where do you think it goes?

Olive Garden?

Behr's Den (privately owned)?

Most restaurants I have been to the bartender gets my order together. So if I have a drink usually give them 20-25%, if I just go in and pick it up from them 15%. They are the ones who get it together and make sure it is correct.
