Supreme Court agrees to hear NCAA athlete compensation case

It'll be interesting to see if they can separate out men's basketball/football from the rest on this. Women's Rowing will want a stipend too

I don’t see how they can come up with a balanced measure here unless all scholarship athletes are given a stipend. Once you get outside of football and men’s basketball the rest are probably at best break even. There will be some schools of course where women’s basketball is a money maker.

Right now it’s even. The scholarship is the compensation and let’s be honest it is significant. On the other side of the coin the university is literally making millions on the backs of the football and men’s basketball teams.

Not sure how to balance it. As someone bright up if they are paid should we yank the scholarship? Let another individual have that scholarship in another sport? Both sides have a compelling case.

Not much of one

So pay them outright, do away with with their scholarships and perks, and let them budget their payments accordingly. If they can’t do it kick them out of school and if they want to go to another school they have to pay their own way 100% and provide proof of where the money comes from. Teach them some real world consequences.

A couple of considerations:

A lot of college athletics will go away - particularly women's sports.

If you don't believe that athletes are compensated, then consider the student loan "crisis". The horror stories about student debt should pretty well quantify the fact that athletes are getting paid very well. If the issue is that athletes are basically indentured servants working their way to the NCAA or NBA, take that up with the pro sports who use college athletics as farm teams.

Nuke college football. The Vols are never going be good again so wgaf.

I chuckle at this but half heartedly am already there.

College football has become an oligarchy. Bama, Clemson, OSU and some other team. Cheating is no longer a concern. Those programs have the best teams money can buy. It has become boring to a degree.

Clemson is the only reason for any optimism. 10 years ago they were a nobody program and now they're 2nd only to bama. Goes to show that many programs are capable of making the climb given the right conditions and a requisite disregard for the NCAA's ******** rules.

You but the formula is pretty narrow. You have to be based out of a shtt town or area that no one cares about so that all people will do is give money to your program. You basically need to be the center of their universe.

Plenty of traditional, big time programs have the $$$ ! Texas, Michigan, USC, Tennessee, etc. have struggled for awhile. The teams you mentioned, the teams consistently playing for the NC, have the best coaches that money can buy. Those schools were willing to commit to being the best

This is true. It would be hard to do in the SEC with bama's stranglehold on the conference.

Saban is good. Swinney routinely got waxed early on. Doesnt now because his defensive line is stacked with 5 stars. They are good coaches but the talent differential is too wide.

I dont even get mad at a UT coach when they lose to Bama now. It is like watching 8 graders play 12th graders. It isnt a contest.

Other than OSU, I cant see a national champion outside of the south, in the foreseeable future. All other parts of the country have too many other options.
