So Congress cannot force Americans to engage in commerce, but they can tax the **** out of us if we don't.

Awesome.

I work in health care and see how medicare tries their damndest to keep from paying for a service a patient needs. I can't imagine how bad its gonna be when this kicks in and we add millions of new people. I just wish Palin's crazy ass didn't call it death panels. Sounds too extreme for anyone to believe even though that's what it will be for some. It would be awesome if everybody was covered, there just won't be enough money to pay for it all.

The biggest irony of this entire debate has been that the fiscal responsibility whereby you must pay into the system you are using is a Republican idea.

And a bad idea at that.

Whether you think the healthcare law is a good idea or not, this sets the precedent that Congress can make you buy anything as long as they call it a tax. That's a very unfortunate precedent to set.

If you have health insurance you don;t have to pay the tax because it isn't the rest of us paying for your health care.

If you choose not to buy health insurance, you pay the tax in order not to shift the entire burden of your care on to the rest of us.

Nomenclature notwithstanding, why aren't supposed fiscal conservatives pleased as punch that the government is trying to stop the freeloading in the ERs?

Just absolutely ridiculous. This may open the door for our government to try and dictate more things now. Just freaking ridiculous

Like a mandate on eating broccoli!

(wait, I'm receiving word that fox news has already claimed usage of this one)

Even so, the damage is done. There is no turning back from this as a country, and this is just another sign of we the people losing our freedoms. This will screw up nearly everyone's current coverage until they have switched to the government plan. Big companies are going to drop healthcare for their employees as it will be cheaper for them to just pay a fine instead. This is what Obama wanted all along.

Is this a surprise???? If you thought that this was anything but a back door way of going to a single payer system, you don't need to be voting.....wife just said the DOW is plummeting.

Because some things are more important than free-loading, like freedom.

But you're a lawyer. Don't you worry at all about the possible ramifications of a Congress that has been given the power to mandate purchase of anything so long as they call it a tax?

And private insurance companies don't? Before this law they could drop you in the middle of treatment.

My wife is a PT and she tells me all the time how patients with Medicare are the only ones she feels confident that she can get them the equipment they need (wheelchair, walker, shower bench, etc) with the least amount of hassle.

Medicare for all?
you think that where this will lead?

And you don't? My health care costs my company upwards of $1700 per month. Why wouldn't they just drop health care, pay me a little more and pay the fine.....oh wait, tax? So now I either go get a 30k a year policy (outside of a group) or I go get the Nobama version of HC.......MEDICARE!

Well, give me some examples of things that the Congress might realistically pass and the POTUS sign into law requiring that you buy it or pay a tax?

Its easy to throw your hands up in the air and make the slippery slope argument, but what really awful thing do you have in mind that they will make you buy and let's debate the wisdom of it.

Romney and the GOP can campaign against this now. Romney will look like an idiot for doing so because the Dems can play his comments back to him on it every time he does, but that's his choice.

And the GOP can simply play "it's not a tax" on a loop.

Who cares. If he is going to lead the charge for repeal then he is the person to vote for if you are against the health care law.

Yes it is. The Court finally reached its limit on the Commerce Clause but is now using the taxing power to dictate behavior it cannot touch under the Commerce Clause. We are f'ed.

You misunderstood my answer.
i was saying is not breaking news that congress can tax the **** out of us.

I wasn't referring to commerce clause.

Yes i think we are headed to some form of Medicare for all.

The slippery slope argument is often facetious, but I find it's not nearly so facetious when you talk about politics.

The government could theoretically force us all to buy Chevy cars and simply say if we don't, they'll impose a tax on us. Now you're right, such a thing isn't likely at the present time. But people in politics notoriously lack foresight. It's not so much an issue of what Congress might do in 5 or 10 years, but what they'll do in 20 or 30 when this crop of representatives and this president have been replaced by people who might have less nobler intentions.
