Perhaps you are right, but my sense is that strongmen like Erdogan never want to expose that they are really paper tigers. This would simply make him look weak and give oxygen to his many political enemies inside Turkey. Instead, we emboldened an authoritarian, abandoned an ally to slaughter, and Putin's intel ops guys are making fun of us on twitter as they raise their flags over our bases. That's why 129 house Republicans voted to condemn the troop withdrawal.

Nevertheless, though I think this was the wrong timing, I think we can agree that the Middle East does not create winners, only losers. Russia thinks it is putting its hand into a cookie jar, but it will draw back a stump at some point in the near future.
