T.S.A. At It Again

went thru security this weekend and got to see a couple of interesting things:

- 20min discussion about what was in the baby wipes container in my wife's bag. Finally they bought our story that they actually were for cleaning our son's butt

- my 8mo son's first frisking. That boy must look really dangerous. I only wish he had a full diaper so they could have gone thru that too

Why not open the container and let them look at the wipes? Seems like it would take less than 20 minutes if you had done that?

And did it not occur to you that everything you are bringing on board is subject to them asking to look at it, including opening a container?

I appreciate that you, personally, don't think that looking into the container was necessary.

But isn't that in large part because you knew what was in it?

to clarify, the package of wipes was in their hands for 20min after they took it out of my wife's bag. They debated whether they needed to remove them all from the package to check. It was humorous until they also removed every single bag from our little container we use to pick up our dog's poop and ran them all through the xray scanner individually.

When you said 20 minute discussion and that they "finally" "bought" your claim that they were just wipes that sounds like they were discussing with you and that for some reason you were arguing with them.

it was sarcasm. The brilliant mind protecting our skies* asked what was in the package. I replied "baby wipes- just like it says on the front" and 20min later he concurred with my assessment

* also denotes sarcasm

You can afford to be sarcastic because you knew what was in the box.

They didn't.

I suppose you could have just opened it for them. Would have taken 20 seconds, not 20 minutes. You know, like you agreed to by virtue of buying the ticket and presenting yourself at a U.S. airport for travel.

it's obvious you're having as much trouble with this as the TSA agents. It's basically a plastic bag with a tab on the top that folds back and then re-sticks to the package when you're done. The tab is see through and when opened (not really a difficult thing since my 8mo son has actually accomplished the task a couple of times) it's pretty obvious to anyone what is in it. Add in the fact that he removed it from a bag full of toys, diapers, baby bottles and formula and one would think it was pretty evident where the piece fit in the puzzle.

Surprisingly the very large canister of a powdery substance went thru with barely a glance. But it was labeled "baby formula" so I guess they realized it was fine. "Baby wipes" must be a terrorist tell that I'm not aware of

I'm just glad the TSA is onto you Secret Moslems, PJ.

yeah we look pretty dangerous. I may dress my son in traditional arab garb for the next flight

when people like the TSA are put in charge of US airport security the mooslims are winning

I am really not trying to be difficult but I don't have kids and don't understand. Why would it take 20 minutes to look at a see through container ? Was only part of it visible and you didn't want them to look at the rest ? I must be missing something here because I don't understand why you'd care if they looked.

hey look, you found the point of my story. I didn't care if they looked but the issue was that it took so long to clear a pack of baby wipes. I did not impede their work in any way. The discussion was among 3 different TSA agents. I sat in a chair and tried to keep my son occupied while the brain trust huddled with the dangerous wipes in hand for 20min

From what I understand, airlines rent their gates from the airport owners (most often these owners are municipalities). Airlines should be free to decide what type of screening procedure, if any, they would like to send their customers through. The federal government should not be doing it. If a customer would rather fly on a "higher-risk" flight and pay less, the customer should have that option.

When those planes can be hijacked and turned into makeshift torpedoes it becomes a government security concern.

Not sure why this was so hard to follow

If you keep the bad guys from entering the cockpit, you pretty much solve the problem. The cockpit doors are now pretty tough to get through. Yeah they could kill some people on the aircraft, but another plane hijacking and flying it into something is a pretty remote possibility. Certainly not worth having the TSA, imo.

If I were king, and I should be, TSA would be gone tomorrow. You don't like the risks of flying then, then don't fly.

Interesting that there are not high-level security measures for private, small-bird airports and air-fields.

Maybe the government should have security checkpoints along major thoroughfares, since cars can easily be made into incredibly destructive weapons.
