interesting that he indicated getting through the checkpoint isn't getting to the airport because it's surrounded by people who may not let people through (as evidenced by troops having to "go over the wall" to get people outside the airport in.

another thing to square: on one hand he said we are absolutely committed to get any American (and Afghan who helped us) out if they want to get out but when asked if we would stay past Aug 31st if that has happened he said we'll have to assess that at that time. seems the answer is we stay as long as it takes if #1 is true.

I'd say it's possible. If the Taliban kills an American as we're leaving, basically giving them the country, they are inviting a shitstorm. Maybe they realize it's better to let us leave?

But there's no way in hell they're letting Afghans who helped us to get through peacefully.

I'm assuming they still have some kind of intelligence operation in place. And, if the Taliban kills an American, they'd most likely broadcast that. It only serves as propaganda if people know about it.

that's a lot of ifs

wouldn't have to a kill - could be a kidnapping to hold for hostage later.

all I know is that if I was trying to get through said checkpoint I'm not sure I'd have the confidence in a deal with Taliban that Joe does.
