I'm not saying we shouldn't worry about it, of course we should. Just odd to me that people there and who knew what was going on would stick around for the withdrawal. I'd have thought it pretty clear to them in country that they needed to get the heck out of dodge.
Good point. Maybe some US citizens were under the impression that Afghanistan wouldn’t fall (especially quickly), not a big worry about Taliban taking over, and that there’d be no situation similar to Saigon. As mentioned, maybe doctors had big outreaches planned in Sept and then wanted to come home. Maybe humanitarians had projects ending in the next few months. I don’t think anyone still there necessarily made asinine judgments based on what was told.

depends on why they are there and the guidance they received about both evacuation and expected conditions post 8/31 - remember until 2 weeks ago the official line was there is no rush and the Afghan government is well positioned to be in charge.

and/or you live outside of Kabul and were told when you're ready to leave it won't be a problem to get to Kabul.

This was a great exit planning strategy by the Potato-in-Chief.

Its not a narrative or carrying water. Legit quesiton: who in their right mind would have stayed there leading up to this? Much less 10k such persons.
I guessing the one's that Believed the President of the United States when he said the Afgan government was stable and their military could fend off the Taliban.

The reality is many of these were government people in some capacity who probably fall under the “government knows best part” and believed they would be taken care of by Big Brother.

They are now realizing that is not the case and the Democrats could care less about them.

The Democrats also are counting on people like you and EL to shift the narrative and gas light all the uneducated voters into now believing it’s the trapped peoples faults and not due to the piss poor handling of this.

I honestly don’t know if you are troll or not anymore but it’s pathetic of you to try to push the blame onto the victims.

I’m with you - I would have left same / next day.

I would imagine the people still there are Doctors, Missionaries… people like that. I would also imagine many of them estimated they had more time?

Glad I got a competent pediatrician for my kids who doesn't say "Hey, all of us young people, let's get infected by this new virus that we know very little about and see how it turns out."
Honestly, is that very different from "hey let's get vaccinated with a vaccine we know very little about and see how it turns out"?

BREAKING NEWS: Up to 1,500 Americans including 24 California school students are STILL stuck in Afghanistan: Blinken blames citizens for not leaving earlier as CIA and US helicopters start conducting missions to get everyone out

Up to 1,500 Americans are still trapped in Afghanistan and the U.S. is still relying on the Taliban to allow safe passage to Kabul airport with just six days before the August 31 deadline, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in a press conference on Wednesday.

Blinken gave an updated on the airlift operation and the bid to get all citizens and Afghan allies out amid reports the CIA has joined US troops in rescue missions outside the airport perimeter.

Among those left are 24 school children from California who visited on a summer trip and haven't been able to leave.

Blinken appeared to blame Americans still on the ground for not leaving fast enough after first being warned earlier this year to leave Afghanistan as soon as possible.

oh man did you ever bury the lede

Blinken: US efforts will continue after airlift mission
More now from the US secretary of state.
"While evacuating Americans is our top priority, we're also committed to getting as many Afghans out as we can before August 31," Tony Blinken says.
He says priority is being given to Afghans who have previously worked with the US government.
"It's hard to overstate the complexity and danger of this mission," the top US diplomat continued.
"We're taking every precaution, but this is very high risk," Blinken adds.

He says the US will continue trying to help Americans and Afghans leave after the US military departs on the 31 August deadline.

Efforts will be made "not just during the duration of our evacuation and relocation mission, but every day thereafter," says Blinken.

"This is about real people. Many scared. Many desperate," he adds, referring to reports of a child dying amid the chaos at the airport.
"Lives hang in balance during these critical days."

First admission that we will be leaving Americans behind (but we'll "try" to help them).

Dang
