Amazing the carnage Osama Bin Laden wrought from 9/11, to the Patriot Act and associated war on terror security state, to Congress abdicating it's war authorization, to endless wars, to drone bombings of civilians, to what now appears to be a severe blow to our ability to lead and the loss of faith in the US from the NATO members.

staggering
Everything we did there after destroying al-Qaeda was self-inflicted. Now, bin Laden probably figured that we would end up doing a lot of those things, but he didn't force any of that upon the United States.

Call me a jaded a-hole, but perhaps it's time for those trying to escape to start thinking of making their stand and fighting back. I've seen plenty of military aged males (and females) waiting to board flights out.

It's past time for the ones relying on us for protection to actually start fighting for themselves.

Given we trained the ANA for 20 years and they folded like a cheap suit in less than a month, I doubt something like this is even in the cards.

There was no way not to fail irrespective who sat behind the resolute desk.

At least now you guys can finally have some relief that there were terrorist attacks and people were killed.

Failure in what? Afghanistan eventually falling back into the hands of the Taliban? I don’t think anyone ever doubted that was a real possibility once we left regardless of who was President. There absolutely was a way to have an orderly and safer withdrawal from Afghanistan and the orders that came down from your boy was not it.

Partisan conflict is practically written into Afghan DNA. They have the capability, the weapons (obviously) are there. They just need the unifying force and will to do what needs to be done.

who would they even fight? ostensibly the Taliban are providing protection from ISIS-K who apparently slip a couple suicide bombers into the crowd. should they fight the Taliban who are least partially providing the security for them to get to and into the airport?

So basically today at this point we have 2% military casualties and 1% of those fatalities for the numbers presented in country. Not a trivial amount and their deaths are directly tied to a fiasco evacuation operation. Absolutely disgusting

edit: my math is thankfully wrong off by a factor of 10

outside of the cities the average Afgan DGAF who's in charge, their day to day life remains the same.

Yeah - I don't know. I don't even know what to think anymore.
