We left on 8/31 instead of 9/11 not because the Taliban said they'd fight us, but because we wanted to. This was our choice.

Evidently they expect Austin and Milley to to be. I realize when military commanders fail they get canned or replaced. This was a huge undertaking and it involved more than just the military. This was bye and large an intelligence failure. I don't excuse Biden. It happened on his watch and he has to take the heat. I think this rises to the level of a congressional inquiry or investigation of the military, the IC and the President. People get tired of congressional investigations but it is their job.

Nobody wants the democrats investigating this unfortunately. It would be a total waste of time. I think they should wait until the House is taken by Republicans but someone, or two, or three or four has to be held accountable and relieved of their duties.

Your last sentence is interesting.

So devils advocate - do we stay however long it takes to get every American out, no matter how long it takes? Even if they can’t/won’t leave? And by “can’t” I mean can’t as in they are doctors with patients or whatever work they are doing won’t allow them too.

I don't think that accurately describes those we left behind.

I'll also add that we left a ton of Afghans we were committed to get out as well. Because we had the mad rush a good number of the people we got out were 3rd priority at best.

It would be messy anyway you do it but if you publicly commit to get everyone out and promise to use all resources available to make that happen then you in effect are defining the mission as getting everyone out. Going back on that word is abandoning the mission.

The proper way to have handled this is get everyone that wants out out before withdrawing troops and tactical support to the ANA. At that point, anyone refusing to leave, you let them know you can't guarantee their safety in the future. Then they are well aware of the possible consequences. Then you pull troops and lastly, tactical support of the ANA. After that, what happens happens and you just pray those that decided to stay behind and risk their lives find safety. But you also know it was their decision. They didn't just get abandoned after being misled with false promises.
