I wasn't watching the whole sequence, and I like McGee, but bringing in the best reliever for a big moment isn't awful.

No it isnt. But rodney has been shaky all season even though he pitched lights out in wbc. If he pitched in more situations like that id have no prob with it but i believe hickey wanted just that to see how rodney handled it
