Taxpayers would get checks from $600 $1200

he continued to raise interest rates after he took over and was a fed governor before that. the fed uses core inflation which does not include energy or food. which is 100% appropriate. raising interest rates would not help either energy or food prices. the most important thing the fed looks at is wage inflation. if you want to blame someone for your food costs going up I suggest you look at all the idiots thinking ethanol is the future for alternative energy. ethanol by itself doubled corn prices which filters into virtually every food category.
Oh I agree, Ethanol subsidies are pure madness. I hate them.

But regarding core inflation, review that critique of the CPI I sent you.

just the fact that this guy says that we had a declining standard of living since the 80s shows that this analysis carries no weight. I also suggest he look at why 30 year interest rates are at 4.3% compared to 10-12% in the early 80s if he thinks inflation is going out of control. Obviously the market does not agree.

I stand to get checks for $1,800 if this gets passed . . . yet I find the whole concept of a "stimulus package" completely idiotic. This is the govrnement giving you your money back.

It's like you've been giving your sorry cousin $10 every week to go to the store to get you a gallon of milk and he finally has gotten around to giving you some change and wants to be a hero.

I guess the question is - how do you define standard of living? Health costs? Energy costs? Internet access? Cheap electronics? Time with your family?

all of those things. obviously the internet has increased our standard of living. the number of americans with cars, who own homes, and have discretionary income are at all time highs. unemployment and inflation are at 30 year lows. these are good times. yes gas costs a lot, healthcare, but people have far more money to pay for these things. and americans per capita have never been wealthier. just the fact that the majority of americans have cell phones and ipods should tell you we have a lot of money to burn.

Wait who was it in here that was saying it was a redistrubution of wealth to the wealthy?

Bottom line is it's not a perfect idea, but I'd rather this happen than raise taxes to bail out home lenders and borrowers.

The fact that the government believes that this will pull us out of the hole we are in....is just downright scary

I don't think the government for one second believes this will pull us out of any pending recession. I do believe that they think it's a good psychological boost to our economy and that's debatable, even by the brightest of economists.

I would say they also think - "I don't want to be known as the politician that chose not to give some rebate back when every one else is on board".
