TE Coaching Hire ???

Brian Hartline didn’t have near the career that Witten had. He came to OSU and has been an excellent addition to their staff. Plus he recruits at a high level. All with zero coaching experience before Ohio St.
Bingo. It’s not about coaching experience it’s about what you know and whether or not you have a passion to share that knowledge with others. Having a high-profile name with NFL experience is just a big bonus. “Sorry I don’t have much coaching experience I was busy having one of the best careers in the NFL of all-time.” - Jason Witten

I’ll take my chances

Love him. Great VFL. He needs to gain coaching experience before coaching at a place like Tennessee. See Jeff Saturday at the Colts for example. Great center, should be hall of gamer. Just didn’t need to be an interim in the League.

Tennessee is no one’s training ground.
This is INSANE.

Ask Jonathan Echols if he’d be okay with learning how to play TE from Jason Witten.

I can’t with some of you guys… unbelievable.

Kinda like the #1 DB hunter. When Deon Sanders called and offered to teach him how to be a NFL DB, young Mr Hunter signed with well known powerhouse Jackson State. Could Witten do the same here, probably.

Tight end coaches and running back coaches frequently have major responsibilities beyond just coaching their position group, like being the OC (Golesh) or being a leader in the recruiting effort. Few people know more about being a TE than Witten, but whoever CJH chooses also needs to be good at the other 70% of the job he will be assigned.

I think the obvious names of interest are:

- Seth Littrell (former North Texas HC, Has coached TEs in past, was teammate of Heup at OU.

- Joe John Finely, has been TE Coach for Heup at Mizzou, and was with Kiffin at Ole Miss under Lebby, followed Lebby to OU His alma mater.

Other possibilities;
Jeff Faris - TE Coach at UCLA previously at Duke, considered rising star, and is originally from Knoxville.

John David Baker - TE Coach Ole Miss, worked under Lebby last year or two, was at USC trojans before that. A fast rising star in coaching, has history and ties to similar offense thru Lebby and back to his GA days at North Texas who ran a similar offense.

Heup got Golesh from Iowa State, why not go back to the well. I've been very impressed in my research of their current TE Coach Taylor Mouser. Young smart confident guy. Could see him being a bright young coach, his energy and personality could make him a good recruiter. Since he's been there, the TEs have been good and didn't have guys hit the portal. They stayed and developed.

No doubt Jason Witten could write the book on how to play tight end. I'm sure there's a lot more to being a major college coach than knowing a position. T Martin didn't set the world on fire while here.
To be fair Tee wasn't an NFL hall of fame guy. Especially a guy you want in the draft leagues like espn. Witten played for 20 years in fantasy most of these kids know who he is

Don’t be stupid. He didn’t just play the position. He is one of the best TEs of all time who had a 17-year career in the NFL. You don’t think he knows a thing or two about how to play the position? He knows how to succeed and he’s shown a desire to teach/coach. If he cares about the development of HS and collegiate athletes he will be a phenomenal coach.
Agreed just like Dilfer qnd he wasn't the best qb. But he got the job done in Tampa

Teaching something at a high level is different from doing that thing at a high level, sure. But c’mon man; he didn’t just play the position. He’s one of the best TE’s to ever step on a football field. Top 10 if not top 5 in NFL history. That history of success alone would help in the recruiting department, and you don’t stay in the league as long as he did without being a student of the game as well as a baller.

It may help in recruiting. But you still haven’t really given anything other than him being amplayer that would signify he would be a good TEs coach. Is Georgias TE coach one od the best TEs to ever play? No. But he is likely gonna put Washington and Bowers in as first round picks.

Think about it. How is Witten any better than a bunch of D1 TE coaches that have been coaching TEa at the college level?

Doesn’t matter what he does or doesn’t know. Again, how do you know he can teach college aged TEs? You don’t. And don’t play your usual crap like you know more than anyone else because you don’t. Witten could be a create TE coach. Or he could be terrible. Nobody knows. But you can’t say for a fact, based on his NFL career, that he would be a great TE coach.

What I will say about Witten is he knows what it takes at both levels. Can he recruit who knows but using UGAs coach as example because of Bowers and Washington dude caught lightning in a bottle and they were the IT school. Not sure he has done anything outside those two

Not going to disagree that Witten would get attention from top notch HS tight end recruits. Would he mesh with Coach Heuple and the rest of the staff? Does his technique fit the current system? Is CJH considering him? I would be happy with the hire as I have no doubt CJH knows what he wants.

What about Jay Graham? Where is he at now? After a google search I didn’t realize he wasn’t coaching in college anymore.

Coaching is always a training ground. That's such a lazy argument. Our new OC was training for the job the last two years on campus. It was quite literally a training ground for the OC position at UT.

And the job in question is Tight Ends coach. He's clearly qualified
Everyone asks their TEs to do different things. Just because he was a great TE doesn't mean he is the right fit to coach Heupel's system

Now that the OC staff position is filled, we move on to the TE's coach. I've seen some think this is an outside hire or is it a GA or analysts already on staff. I think someone with strong recruiting ties to GA and FLA helps but strong recruiter is a big plus. What names is anyone hearing or whom do you want?
Don't really have a name, but I do know one thing. We need an absolute beast of a recruiter and talent evaluator with this hire. Gotta strengthen recruiting every chance you get

TE coach doesn't have to be a current TE coach, or even played the position. Some of the "best" around were former RB coaches or WR coaches. Get a great young recruiter.

Georgia Southern wide receivers coach Marcus Davis

I totally agree with everything you said. I think Davis is off to Auburn as receivers coach

I thought I had the perfect candidate out of left field but research reared it’s ugly head and served up defeat. 😔 I read an Athletic article about South Dakota State’s quarterback and their return to the FCS title game. In it was scheme talk about their use of the TE and how many have ended up NFL bound recently. But he’s first year, and I doubt South Dakota has honed his SEC recruiting chops.
