TE Coaching Hire ???

Neither had Brian Hartline at Ohio St. He's one of their better Coach's and an elite recruiter. 2017 was his first ever coaching job.
Witten at least has some coaching experience, as he's at least the head coach at a high school in Texas. There's been plenty of people that have made the jump from high school to college.

1,228 receptions
13,046 receiving yards
74 touchdowns

Nice try. Mike Vick was a pretty good athlete too. With your logic he’d make a great coach. So again where is that list of HS coaches that were brought to a top 5 NCAA program?

Was Michael Vick a top 5 player of all-time at his position? Because that’s what Jason Witten was.

Played 9 seasons in the NFL and had a 253 yard game in the first of two straight 1000 yard seasons. Not a HOF like Witten when he’s eligible but no scrub. He was a grad assistant for one season before the wife beater got booted. So not the same arc as Witten. My understanding is he’s already accepted the job at Lipscomb. Not the type to leave them high and dry imo.
Yes, not a scrub but far from top 5 all-time at his position. Witten also has coaching experience (high school) where he turned a 2-8 team to a 10-2 team. Not the same arc as Hartline, but Hartline’s one year as a grad assistant shouldn’t make this a different argument. Plus, the Lipscomb thing isn’t a done deal yet.

I’m really impressed at your googling abilities. However, I believe coaching is the position in the question. All of his NFL numbers really mean 0. He can’t suit up and play.

Yeah I guess that’s why Prime is such a horrible recruiter right?

So in his 4 years at UT and 17 in the NFL, you don't think Witten saw any coaching techniques that would be useful to a college player? He may not want to be a position coach at his Alma mater, but there probably aren't 50 people in the nation who know more about playing tight end than Jason Witten. What a silly argument.

I'd be shocked if he joined the staff. But lack of competence will not be the reason.

He was at least in the same position as Pope and had developed relationships with recruits. Amidst all the Urban Meyer fallout, an in-house promotion was way less a leap than what’s being proposed.

Littrell was on Currie's radar during the 2018 coaching search per Blake Toppmeyer in a KNS column yesterday.
Him and Heupel know each other well. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’ve talked already but like someone said earlier Heupel may want an up and comer that will be here longer.

No the silly argument is people like you arguing that he will come in and be a successful coach just bc he has great NFL accolades. All because you can’t take the orange glasses off and leave the UT witten love affair out of the equation. There are probably plenty of hall of famers who have no desire and would possibly be awful coaches. Could he be a great coach? Sure, maybe, I don’t know. But people like yourself are arguing he would be just on the basis that he played here and you’re in love with the name. I’m a witten fan myself, I live 20 minutes from where he attended HS and where his brother currently coaches. The point is he has done nothing to show that he would be a great coach that deserves a spot on a top 5 in the NATION ball team. There are other retired NFL tight ends who had great careers but you aren’t clamoring for them.

Lol you act like prime brought in a top 5 class. He’s about to ride the struggle bus when that school can’t keep up with NIL offers.
Sanders had zero coaching experience when he took over JSU. He recruited very well pulling in the #1 rated DB . I seriously doubt he will ever see the struggle bus but keep on with your doubts.
I have no idea if Coach has any interest in Witten or Witten any interest in coaching at UT. But my belief is he would be successful and a fan favorite. Without doubt HS players know who he is and the best tight end recruits would be excited to get a phone call from him.

You’re all missing the point bc of your clouded orange glasses. Is witten well known? Sure he is. Was he a great player? Of course. Has witten done anything in the coaching world yet to warrant a shot on the coaching staff at a top 5 program? Absolutely not. He’s still coaching high school ball. Deon got his first chance at JSU. A school many prob didn’t even know existed until deon put it on the football map. Now we’re suggesting witten get his first shot at a top 5 program. Could he excel? Possibly. None of us can tell the future. My argument is the only reason he’s even mentioned is because of his ties within the program. I’d rather have a proven coach than a proven name that makes my little orange heart warm and fuzzy due to program ties.

They could hire Jay Graham back. He’s a great recruiter and between him and Jerry Mack one of them could coach TEs

I believe the “chances” Heupel takes are more heavily vetted than the many that have been undertaken by previous HC’s. Think Pope vs Larry Scott/Walt Wells/Mike Canales for Butch and Shelton Felton/Brian Niedermeyer/Joe Osovet for Pruitt…the latter two names for TE’s at one point (and I was an Osovet believer). I don’t believe “WTH let’s take a shot!” is in Heup’s vernacular.

Ooh ooh! Forgot Chris Weinke coaching RB’s for Pruitt!

Nor do I. Bye the way, I was not including Heup in my "history" of late hires. I will give him more time to see how his "history" will play out. AND I personally don't think Whitten would be much of a "chance". His only question in my mind would be recruiting.

No he can't play but he's a VFL, has connections in Texas, comes from a coaching family, and I'm pretty sure he knows the TE end position. I would bet he could get anybody's attention while sitting on their living room couch selling UT. All his NFL numbers don't mean much but you can bet your ass his NFL experience does. Didn't Hugh Freeze coach High School and make an immediate impact?

He was reported to be the next coach at Lipscomb in Nashville. How would you know where he would or wouldn’t go. GBO!
You’re right he was reported, it was all over the place anybody who follows football seen it.

He visited and obviously didn’t accept.

I use something called common sense, why would he leave Texas where the man has endorsements, deals, and currently coaching his kids? He’s an icon in Texas his family is settled there his kids are in school.

He doesn’t need the money.

I know people at Lipscomb..........He considered the job, but said his family and Texas ties were too much. He ain't leaving Texas until his kids are out of school.

That's what I was told.
