Team News (current roster)

Love the potential and excited about the growth and development of this years team.Looking forward to seeing how much the newcomers can help also. GBO
I am just excited we are off and running and can start to learn about all the old and new pieces. Loved the updates on ZZ as well as Carr and Jefferson. Really hoping that Dilione DEMONSTRATES expanded point skills that will be needed till ZZ gets back. So many other new pieces to learn about. I am curious to see if the staff plans on following previous minute and substitution patterns, or if a high percentage of these guys pan out if we throw out some platoon TYPE tendencies. Easier to keep the defensive pressure on high if we have enough players that sync up. Hope to get some similar POSITIVE updates on the bigs old and new as well. I am presently in the hope springs eternal mode till given some real reasons to not go there.

Santiago Vescovi talked to Josiah-Jordan James first. Then the Tennessee basketball senior went to the coaching staff with a strong belief: Cade Phillips can play — and he can help this season. “I don’t know what his future is going to be and if he is going to redshirt or not,” Vescovi said Tuesday. “But I think he is a really active player who can help us.”

Phillips is the least-known Tennessee freshman in a decorated class with star point guard Freddie Dilione, high-scoring guard Cameron Carr and big man J.P. Estrella. But he’s changing that. He’s shifting the conversation and expectations to a level that Vescovi and James voiced to Vols coach Rick Barnes that UT cannot afford to redshirt Phillips.

...He has a football background and brings it to the basketball court. He has been unbothered by the style of play and instead has proven his toughness. “I am very versatile,” Phillips said. “I am a larger guy at the four position. I have good feet and good quickness and I am a little bit more physical than people give me credit for.”

Vescovi went beyond that assessment. He said Phillips is one of the most physical players the Vols have. He not only handles contact, but embraces it and likes it. He lauded Phillips as one of the most active players around — perhaps the second-most active behind sophomore Tobe Awaka in the way he rebounds and moves in the post.

Will Cade Phillips redshirt as Tennessee basketball freshman? The decision is no longer easy

That is more than interesting, in a good way.

I hope that Barnes doesn't redshirt Phillips. I don't think any player that has voluntarily redshirted a whole season during Barnes tenure has worked out. Lamonte Turner redshirted, but he wasn't eligible to play. DJ is currently a question mark as to whether he is going to work out. Tamba and Burns left after their redshirt seasons.

Awaka and Phillips can be Tennessee's Twin Towers.

This is true, add Corey Walker to that list of people that have redshirted and then transferred out.

Burns left because he wouldn't get into better physical shape is what I heard through rumor mill. Tamba was never going to play at Tennessee....

Seth is a good friend of Rick AFAIK. He had a chance to sit in on practice and gave his thoughts. He came away very impressed. It’s the comments about how much faster he is seeing us play compared to last year that excites me. Obviously, all of this is to be talent with a grain of salt as it’s just another “glowing practice report” but if this team can play fast, which we haven’t done in the Barnes tenure even though we’ve tried, we’ll be so much fun to watch and win a lot of games.

I would enjoy watching Tennessee get at least 500 fast break points this season.

Aidoo looks GREAT in the limited video posted on instagram from today’s pro day. Hitting contested corner threes and a few strong buckets at the basket. Grain of salt, because obviously everyone they showed looked good, but he really stuck out in the limited highlights.
Something that also stood out to me was Zakai was running 100% on the offense side of things. He was making hard cuts off his leg, so he is farther in rehab than I expected

Where can I watch this video?

When I spoke with Steve Hamer at the Big Orange Caravan a few months ago, he indicated ZZ was ahead of schedule in rehab and would be full go for most if not all of the season. I’m paraphrasing, but that’s the jist of what I remember him saying. He didn’t seem worried about him.

The staff is 'holding him back' (which is a good thing when staff - keeps you from pushing your body too fast, too far - some athletes push their bodies mercilessly) ... I am of the mind this is to make sure that healing is 100%. The staff is programming AGAINST the worst possible outcomes - re-injury or secondary injury.
ZZ has a driven mentality. He's a thoroughbred. Gotta love it!
