no. not even close. FL is in so much better shape than ND right now.......it's not really close.

the only reason anyone can say that is because of tradition. in the last 10 years they've been squat.
tradition is exactly the reason everyone is saying it.

Pestige of the program does not always rely on wins and losses. They are the only program that can say they are on National Television every week. They probably have the largest following in the nation. The job is a step up from Florida and probably always will be.

If you RUN the ball up the middle and score, fine. But don't kick a field goal up 20 pts when the line was 22 1/2. That looks bad and is bad! Run the ball and if Miami can't stop them, fine. BUSH LEAGUE move by UF. It WILL come back to them down the road. KARMA!!!!

i understand it. but in the here and now, no one is going to tell you that ND is a greener pasture than Florida right now.

leaving Florida for ND, and considering that a step up is just a fallacy.

In terms of prestige there are certainly a handful of jobs better than Florida. I'd put Ohio State, Notre Dame, USC, and Michigan in those ranks.

I meant more in terms fo having some current success, momentum, plenty of money, etc. All potnetially fleeting, yes, but Florida right now is one of the top college jobs in the country and so leaving there to go to one of those seems lateral, at best.

And Florida is one of, if not the, premier team in a conf. that just signed the two most lucrative tv deals ever. they are likely to be on primetime national Cable and broadcast TV 8 games of 12. Given that one of those networks is ESPN, i don't think NBC can hold a candle to the exposure Florida and the SEC is, and will be, getting over the next 15 years.

to me it's at best for ND a push.

Nobody disagrees that Florida is in a better situation from a competitive standpoint. As BPV said. Win a national title at Florida and you probably go down as a great coach. Win a national title at Notre Dame, you go down as a legend.

at the very best. USC being the lone exception.

the others are no better than FL right now.

you're the top dog in one of the most talent rich states in the country, you've won two nataional titles in the last ten years, you have what is considered one of the best game day atmospheres in the country, you have a young program, two heisman winners, #1 class after #1 class.

tradition......correct me if i'm wrong, but it wuold seem to me that FL is building a tradition while some of those others (ND specifically) is resting on it?

Tradition's all you need when your history is as rich as Notre Dame's. No program in the country has more legendary coaches, players, heisman trophy winners, championship team, etc. It's still the biggest job in college football.

Sure, the apple's lost a bit of its shine...but Meyer could have them in the top 10 in no time.

the first guy to win a nt at FL was SOS. i think it's safe to say he'll go down as a coaching legend.

the book is still being written on Meyer obviously, but he's off to a decent start.

as long as you win and win a lot it doesn't matter if you are coaching at duke. the prestige will come with winning.

Check the classes Weis has pulled the last few years.

Steve Spurrier will never be the coaching legend Lou Holtz is.

I hope UF and ND suck EVERY SINGLE YEAR. That would make life much better on the hill!

I'd rather coach at Colorado...so I can snow ski from Jan-March! That is the best job in the country!!!!!

now, that i agree with. he could make the difference there. his track record speaks for itself and would do well in luring kids to South Bend.

but let's be clear, while i agree that Meyer could probably turn ND back in to a contender, it's the notion that he'd leave FL and consider it a step up that i think is wrong. FL is a top dog right now. for all intents and purposes, ND would still be a bit of a project for him.

and that's the reason it's not a step up. he's got FL right where he wants 'em. and it would take him longer at ND than it did at FL.

Personally I think CUM is a phenominal coach but I would still like to see him win something of merit with his own players.

one day, people will go back down memory lane in the SEC and there will be a short list of coaches that will be really worth mentioning. #1 on that list will be Bear Bryant. #2 on that list will be Steve Spurrier.
