The puzzling choice to not block Alex Brown in the UF game derailed that season.I get tired of this topic. Tee was a great college QB, and a blue chip out of high school. Until Josh Dobbs and Hendon, he was the last Vol QB to be named All SEC. He wasn't the most accurate QB, but he had a cannon and when teamed with Peerless was pretty unstoppable. We became a much more physical team in 1998, which was the key to winning a national championship.
One of Fulmer's downfalls as a coach was that he scrapped what had been successful on offense in 1998 and kept trying to replicate the Manning years. Clausen came out of the gate looking like the 2nd coming but was a lost cause by the end of his senior year and wasn't worth a late round draft pick. When Fulmer did go out and get a qb with wheels (Banks and the Future come to mind), he moved them to WR, or whiffed (Schaeffer).
That's not to knock Peyton or Fulmer. Peyton was a "once in a generation" talent; but how many times did Phil get interviewed on signing day and talk about how this QB reminded him of Peyton Manning. We won a natty by being a physical running team with a QB who could beat you with his legs or throwing deep off play action.
On Tee, his comp % was off his senior year because he played half the year with a seperated left shoulder. Dude got his teeth literally knocked out and who knows how many concussions because we couldn't block Alex Brown against Florida. When he got healthy, he was unstoppable against Notre Dame, Georgia, and Bama. He was SEC offensive player of the week multiple times against Top 10 ranked teams. He wasn't completing 65% of his passes, but he carried us at times that season. We would've been playing in the SEC Championship again and possibly another NC game had Jamal not muffed a screen pass against Arkansas and had it returned for a TD.
Condredge and his mom endured Vols Pall Mall hate while at UT. Fortunately, he had a position coach friend who kept him steady. No doubt Tee endured and endures some of that as well. Humans gonna human no matter what epidermis tone or hue they are. Now, regarding Tee's play. I'd lay it down on Fulmer being too Bowden Wyttish. He got away with this for a while, because he out-talented teams. But once schemes modernized, he practically refused to change to counter the new reality. Had he let Tee be Tee, I do believe we'd have seen a different QB. He had the arm. Might not have been Johnny Quick or Jay Garrick, but he had enough mobility helped keep the chains moving. So, I think the real problem with Tee's play was that Fulmer was our Mark Stoops at the time. You mean racism, of course.
And I'm sure there's an element of that working in the fan base against Tee, but I think it's not the biggest element. Consider: we as a group LOVE the Artful Dodger, Condredge Holloway; we collectively CHERISH Tony Robinson; we ADORE Al Wilson, and Eric Berry, and Heath Schuler, and Reggie, and Raynoch, and Donte, and Peerless, and a ton of other lads who wore orange with skin some color other than white.
We are not, collectively, a racist body of fans. I've always been proud of us for that. I hate that there are any racists among us, one is too many, but there aren't a lot.
Which makes the widespread apathy for Tee all the more mysterious.
Go Vols!

Like a prize fighter that didn't know when to quit, Tee kept getting back up but he wasn't the same player the rest of the season.
With one of the best OLs and RBs in college football history and a star-studded D, led by Al Wilson. If the D had a really good DC, no telling how good they could have been. Fred White, Deon Grant, Dwayne Goodrich, Andre Lott, Billy Ratliff, Eric Westmoreland, Rayoch Thompson, Ron Green, Darwin Walker, Spencer Riley, Shaun Ellis (8 drafted in NFL and Ratliff would have been drafted had he not had bad knees).I still can't believe they pulled off that Florida game. Florida QB barely missed the the receiver in OT a couple of times. Amazing how they win with 60 yards passing.
So let's just breakdown ALL the shortcomings of ALL our quarterback then shall we i have no problems:
A lot of you are leaving out Tee had 600+ rushing and 16tds
Rate (1-5) and why?
Andy Kelly
Heath shuler
Todd Helton
Peyton Manning
Tee Martin
Casey Clausen
Rick Clausen
Erik Ainge
Jon Crompton
Tyler Bray
Josh Dobbs
Jarrett G
Hendon Hooker
Joe Milton
Question:
Why couldn't we never beat Florida with Manning, that's possibly 2 more championship right there and we were just as stout. I need a refresh
There is plenty QBs on here you can critique but only 1 has a natty enjoy!
Your Florida question shows the flaw in your argument. You obviously don’t remember those UF games with Peyton. So let's just breakdown ALL the shortcomings of ALL our quarterback then shall we i have no problems:

All these QBs you are naming are not on the list:In no particular order:
Manning, Shuler, Hooker, Clausen, Dobbs.
Heupel has a natty but Mayfield and Murray (2 Heisman winners) don’t. And there is a good sized list of average to even below average QBs that have Super Bowls (Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Foles, Flacco, etc). So that doesn’t carry much weight with me in measuring their performance.
A NC takes the cake for me. The rest are in good order.I think there are 6 that stand out above others. I could make an argument that #'s 4-6 could be interchanged.
1. Peyton (obvious)
2. Hooker (pretty obvious)
3. Robinson (not on your list for some reason-may have won Heisman had he not been injured)
4. Shuler - excellet passer, excellent runner, excellent leader
5. Tee (NC- great leader, tough as nails)
6. Dobbs - Very good passer, great runner, great leader, with better supporting cast could have won a NC with his skills and leadership. Great college QB.
That "blah" offense averaged 435 yds per game.We were conservative with where we threw the ball. Very rarely did we attack down the field between the hash marks as they didn’t trust Tee. He threw a really bad pick against FSU in the championship game over the middle. To be hobest the offense was kinda blah for most of the season.
Per Sports-Reference.com: 204.5 YPG passing, 230.5 YPG Rushing = 435Ummm...no, it didn't. It averaged 398.
Syracuse: 390
Florida: 235
Houston: 589
Auburn: 218
Georgia: 366
Alabama: 348
South Carolina: 561
UAB: 447
Arkansas: 377
Kentucky: 466
Vanderbilt: 430
Miss State: 359
Florida State: 392
Total: 5178
Average: 398.31
Yeah, their averages are messed up. If you notice under the team stats, it says there were only 11 games, Tennessee played 13, but they did not count the 13th, so you have to divide by 12 not 11. If you add up the yards under "passing", you get 2250. That's what they had through 12 games (278 against FSU). If you add up the yards under "rushing", you get 2536. That's also what they had through 12 games. So if you divide by 12 instead of 11, you get 187.5 passing, and 211.3 rushing.Per Sports-Reference.com: 204.5 YPG passing, 230.5 YPG Rushing = 435
And yet, not bad at all, especially coupled with an excellent D.Yeah, their averages are messed up. The omission of Clausen and Scott is puzzling. Dobbs might be top ten. MightI think there are 6 that stand out above others. I could make an argument that #'s 4-6 could be interchanged.
