Tenn Fans: How would you grade your position units Nationally? (from a Duck)

I was joking that you gave him a waiver cause Oregon was gonna beat us bad. The other poster was saying the waiver could be because you expected us handle them easily. I was trying to get a prediction out of you.

Sorry. I'm a little slow.

Are you really going to make me answer that? Some people will be calling for my fan card.

I preface by saying anything can happen, but it's Oregon. I can't fathom any scenario where we can slow down that offense. Plus, it's the Vols' first big test and we have to travel across the country. I can't remember the details but I saw an article once about performance of teams who travel across three timezones to play. The results weren't good.

Basically, we have to play flawless and get lucky to win.

We need to almost play flawlessly and they need to turn it over more than once. Special teams, particularly our coverage teams against their speed scares me.

I'm currently in Bend, OR heading to Portland airport tomorrow. I must say that Oregon fans are some of the most humble and nicest people you will ever meet. They have an outstanding team but you wouldn't know it by talking to them. They told me that they think TN could win this game and they are not taking it for granted. I told them I hope we keep it within two touchdowns. They saw what happened to Oregon State and it has them concerned. I don't think we win but I hope it's at least competitive. I like the Ducks and their fans. I wish I could say the same thing about AL, FL, GA, etc..

Also, I realize Oregon has a good O-line but I would not rate that unit an A. Just my opinion..
And I agree with you buddy, that is why I ranked them a "B" last year, and a "B+" for guessing on this year.

I think you, along with many others, got confused with one of your own fans, posting his detail grades of Tenn, but made the mistake of copying and pasting "Oregon" at the top of it. I easily figured out he was not grading Oregon because his rankings were way off, plus at the end of it, it said, "jury still out on in game coaching too", as I had said- and he was only echoing me on that one point for you all too there. So anyways, even though it headed the listing with "Oregon", that is just a typo, it is really his feelings on Tenn... Though I cannot speak for him, does this clear it up?

My best guess on the Vols line up at this point using the OPs original set up.

Offense:
QB: Last year B
This year C+

O-line: Last year A
This year A+

TE: Last year A
This year C+

WR: Last year A+
This year B-

RB: Last year B-
This year A

Defense:
D-line: Last year D
This year A-

LB'ers: Last year B-
This year A- (in time they may prove me wrong though)

DB: Last year F
This year C

Kickers Last year C
Kickers This year B

In short, our defense will be much improved with glaring vulnerabilties in the depth chart on the secondary.

We will switch from a majority pass to a majority run offense, but the wide outs will be a work in progress. I give them a C+ for the season so far, but I expect them to be at a B+/A- by the time we finish, especially when you consider the improved blocking we are already seeing from the WRs. Therefore a B- average.

In the meantime, I expect our Rajon Neal (our RB1) to start catching a lot of passes out of the backfield. We'll see that this week vs. Western Kentucky if the game is close. If we get up big early on WKU, that wrinkle will stay in the playbook until we get to Oregon.

:hi:

I would say we average out to a C+, B team overall. But if injuries start piling up we're in deep trouble. We're still unproven, but have the potential to hang with anyone on any given Saturday. Being realistic,
We're not expecting much this year. It's a shame because so many of us were looking forward to this rematch with a veteran team and now we're in worse shape than we were then. Well Maybe the gap balances out due to Dooley being gone.

Besides this game, I'm looking for Oregon to win a NC. Would love, love, love to see y'all put a hurting on Bama
Thank You. Very kind. We too are all major Vols fans for this season. As we both know, it helps each others schedule strength in the computers, which can make a HUGE difference in the BCS formula, for who goes to the Natty(same on you Bama, lol) A BCS game, or even many other Bowls. But personally, I have always liked Tenn. I am not a fan of the SEC, or even Tenn per say, but I have always found myself singing your guys "Rocky Top" fight song. I rank it the #1 best fight song in American(in my view), #2 being USC's(west) which is also cool, but one cannot sing to it. (and I dont even like USC btw). Even back in 2010, while our game was being played out, I found myself singing Rocky Top along with ya, with pokes from my fellow Ducks saying, "what are you doing" lol

As for Bama, I have a huge respect for their team/program. But honestly, i think if we had played them in the Natty last year, actually our team matches up really well vs them. They are built for power, and to stop any other power team. But they are susceptible to spread, or read option teams(see TAMU). I do not know for sure, but it may have been a great game to watch/great battle, best Offensive mind vs the best Defensive, power vs speed, but both having some of both, just completely doing their own great thing differently. The team that really match up well vs us and give us fits are the teams that can match, or come close, to our speed, and have a blend, teams like USC(w) LSU ect... those are very hard matchups for us. But straight power(Wisky, Stanford of 2-3 years ago), we can run around them.

Thus it would be great to play Bama this year. But they may not even make it there, as even many of their fans are predicting 1-2 loses this year ect... Long season, we shall see. But it would please me to see you guys beat Bama this year. I myself do remember the days when you used to own them back when...

I really believe Oregon is going to win this one. That said, after we win the rest of our games and beat Ole Miss in the SECCG and Oregon wins out in the Pac12, we'll be whipping they a$$ in the last BCS National Championship. Bookend BCS National Championships 'cause Fulmer got it and now Butch gets it.

Offence Last Year:

QB C; couldn't beat real competition

RB C; Weren't physical enough

O Line A+; Great blockers in both run and pass

WR B; One great (Patterson) the rest so so

Offence this year:

QB C; Not proven yet

RB B; Seemingly more physical

O Line A+; Cant get much better than last year

WR C; Talented but enexperienced

Defence last year:

D line B+; Pretty solid

LB B+; AJ Johnson

CB D-: Marcelous Teague couldn't cover me

Safety B; Couldn't make up for extremely poor CB play

Defense this year:

D line B+ still pretty solid

LB B+; Still got AJ

CB C; Somewhat unproven, but no Marcelous Teague

Safety B: Hopefully don't have to make up for extremely poor CB play

Special teams last year:

Kicker B; Not many long attempts made, but not many taken

Punter B; except real punter stunk so bad that the kicker had to punt also.

Special teams this year:

Kicker B; same kicker

Punter B; same punter/kicker situation as last year

Coaching last year:

HC F- Clueless

OC B; wouldn't have minded keeping him

DC F-; Wish he was BAMA's DC ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
fatvol, thanks for the way you listed it, way much better then me, very easy to read. Great job.
And to all the rest, thanks for your input!

Vols, could you please grade out your positions for me, from last year to expected this year to compare/contrast if better/worse please. I confess, I do not know anyone on your 2013 team and how you stack up. I will do the same for my Ducks, being completely unbiased(taking my green/yellow glasses off). Please do the same with your team. And do not let the haters tell you, you do not have a chance against Oregon, as you do. As coaching/motivation/passion/gameplan/system all has just as much, if not more to play then player unit talent, I do agree. Please just be honest in your evaluations of talent groupings. And do not give a total "A" unless that unit (that whole group) is perfect. You will see that I am ranking my units under-ranked maybe at times.

IMO, how my Ducks Rank Nationally vs all the other 120+ teams position by position. Please use this same outline perhaps if you desire to share with me your team:

OREGON:

Offense:
QB: Last year B+
This year A-(though this is just our starter)
O-line: Last year B
This year B+
TE: Last year B
This year B
WR: Last year C-
This year B-
RB: Last year B+
This year B (though we are thin of depth)

Defense:
D-line: Last year B
This year B
LB'ers: Last year B+
This year D (in time they may prove me wrong though)
DB: Last year B(even though lead Nation in interceptions)
This year A-(even though been called best in Nation by almost all sports writers)

Kickers Last year D
Kickers This year D+

Coaching:

Coaching System Last year A
This year A-(ie exact same system)
Coaching play calling Last year A-
This year- Jury is still out, no one knows???

Keep in mind, I am ranking my units to everyone, Bama-LSU ect, and with every other team Nationally.
Some Ducks may think I am being too hard on some units, but that is just my humble honest opinion/Nationally.

Vols: Please rate your units for me. Thanks!
And VOl FREAK: Thank You Sir
Duck in all seriousness, I'm a west coast guy, attended SC da real Trojans SC, my son graduated from UT as a Vol. I watch a lot of SEC and PAC12 games. There's no way on God's green Earth the Quack attack D is one of the best in the nation. You guys are good on D, but at best your D is a midrange SEC East or West defensive team . No lie, just telling it like it 'tis. Fight On! & GBO!

Cs, Ds, Bs all over. Didn't you guys finish ranked second in the nation last year. A bit conservative IMO.

Show me once where i said our D was best in the Nation?
Go back and read my posts, any of them, and show me once where i typed anything you claimed. Please in the future, do not misquote me or put words in my mouth. But since you(not I) brought it up, I think our D, overall(as I was just ranking certain position groups, not overall) is heavily under-rated. In the past, our D has been pretty good, if one looks at the best measurement for UO, YARDS PER PLAY. Why? Well, as you know, UO scores so quickly. Thus, like our game last weekend, spending only 20 mins on Offense, but 40 mins on Defense, the more time one is out on the field on D, the more yards/points one gives up= common sense. I did not rank in any of my posts UO's overall D for this year or last. But if asked, I probably would of given it OVERALL, a B last year and maybe a B- or C+ for coming into this year. Why is I think our LB's are going to be 3 or 4, or 5 notches worse then the ones we had last year. (all our good LB's went to the NFL). So please in the future, do not put words into my mouth.

So your coaching is better without the Head Duck of the last 5/6 yrs?????
Good question...

I think it will play out like this. Chip Kelly was a Brain. He is what set us to elite level. (we have won more games in the last 3 years then any other CFB team in America, and hold the record for most current BCS game appearances at 4, Stanford and Wisky have 3, Bama has 2.) We were ranked at last seasons end at #2, won the rose bowl the year before, year before, lost in the Natty, but tied with 2 seconds left, very close game. We have beat the very best Big-12 team, BigTen Team, and was tied with the very best SEC team with 2 seconds to go in the Natty. I think under Chip Kelly that qualifies us to be considered a elite team. I think we were a good team before Chip, but not a great, or elite team. But we have been the last 3 years- because of Chip. (and his system)(which we have kept).

As for how will it play out with Chip Gone? My guess is that because it is the exact same system, and we have the least turnover of any coaching staff in America(some coaches have been there 30+. 20+ years) nothing will change all that much for a few years. However, because Chip was such a innovator, eventually I think teams will figure out more ways to stop us. I think our current coach is a good one, but he is not as innovate as Chip. Chip was not married to his Oregon Blur system. He can adapt. He can invent. Our OC, who is now our coach is a much more nicer guy, in person, and we love him, but I do not think he will be near the coach Chip was in the end. Thus, I think we will be good still for a year, two, 3 maybe, but we will decline some from not having chip. Chip taught our OC everything he knows. But can our new HC innovate and adjust like Chip. My brain tells me no way. Just my 2c.
