Tennesse’s only path to CFP

The committee has already told us they consider Alabama above us by putting us 3 spots below them last week. They're not going to suddenly put us above them because we beat Vandy of all teams. See this season for what it is - a great and memorable season that will end with a NY6 bowl bid, something very few of us would have even considered a realistic possibility seeing as how we were a total joke of a program 2 years ago.

I think LSU, Utah, Purdue, Kansas State all win this Saturday. No pressure on any of them.

I think everyone agrees this is the only way. Everyone just also agrees that, right or wrong, ain’t no way they’re ranking us over Bama.

This is correct. If nothing else, they will say "Tennessee had Hooker when they beat Alabama, they are no longer the same team"

Maybe not the popular view but at this point I would rather just take the NYD 6 bowl and hope for a solid win and top 5 finish.

UT's D holds them back. I'm not negative at all about what the Vols and Heupel accomplished this year. It is in fact pretty amazing all things considered. But with that D the Vols are not a championship caliber team.

Hooker injury is the final nail. You have made a case that Tennessee has a better resume but that was Tennessee with HH at QB. Committee wants 4 best teams next week.

I feel pretty secure in saying that the only people who actually think we have a chance and are discussing it are those on this board. Had USC been a close upset, different story but we completely 💩the bed.

We are the scrappy up and coming story but no chance committee chooses us over Sabans program.

There is zero chance the committee is going to pick a team with a 2nd string QB and no pass defense for the playoffs. UT needs a major bowl game against an opponent they can defeat. There are no championships to win but there are still a lot of recruits out there on the fence.

I don't see any scenario where a 2 loss UT team gets in over a 1 loss TCU, USC, or OSU. UT has a terrible loss to USCe, although the USCe win over Clemson does help the perception of them.
Personally I'm happy with one of the NY bowls.

We aren’t getting in.

If Bama is ranked ahead of UT, the committee is a joke.

I agree with you on getting in, but really -- a ""joke?"

I dislike Alabama on the best day, but you have to be honest. The Tide is a better overall team than the Vols, especially today. Yes, we beat them by 3 in the game of the year (maybe the game of the decade). It was magnificent! But, that UT team is not today's UT team and Bama had nothing like a 63 point beat down on its resume anywhere this season, and especially not in the last month of the season. It won't take a "fix" or a "joke" to rank Alabama one place ahead of UT tomorrow. I'm just happy that those responsible for the USCe travesty redeemed themselves last Saturday in Nashville. In my view, the Vols earned all of their lofty weekly rankings this season, including #1. They also "earned" the ranking they are now stuck with at the end of the season because of their collective choice to go to Columbia unfocused and mentally unprepared.

It has still been one hell of a year #2 for CJH, his staff, and the Vols players. If they stay focused, the future is very bright. Go Vols!

CFP comittee looks closely at Ala vs UT common opponents. Rewards UT’s better SOS.
East was more dominant than west by far at least the top 3-4 teams this year - disregarding history.
UT won head to head - every recognized tiebreaker in the world looks there first. And ranks UT 6th tuesday night.
1.UGA
2. Mich
3. TCU
4. USC
5. OSU
6. Tenn
7. Ala
if that happens AND USC gets pounded by Utah (possible) and TCU gets walloped by KSU (possible) ….
Then
1. UGA
2. Mich
3. OSU
4. UT
5. Ala
UT is in…its a very longshot but not unbelievable.
Go back in time and beat SC. That’s the only path.

Nah take the CFP, even if we lose it looks good that we made it in year two and all we need is a few guys on defense. A defensive guy, be it transfer portal or incoming freshman could see that and think man they're so close, all they need is that defense, and it might do us more good than harm.

Are they though? They have been on the struggle bus a lot more this year than we have. In fact there have been a few times where they were driving the struggle bus.

Does the committee have an established criteria they use?

I think they say they do. Show me a rule, though, and I bet you can also show me an exception. By and large I think they've done an okay job this year. But, I am pretty certain personal biases effect these votes regularly.

I swear I think I prefer the old polls version of picking a National Champion to this playoff model. They have just moved the subjective choices up a few weeks and gutted the bowl system that I used to really enjoy.
