Tennesse’s only path to CFP

Upcoming CPF Rankings (I'm not wishing this ... but I am expecting this) :
1. UGA
2. Mich
3. TCU
4. USC
5. TN
6. OSU
7. Ala

My rationale: They are making calculations and positioning based on two teams losing this coming weekend and the want to prevent a first round (repeat) matchup of Michigan and Ohio State.

Yes.

A 1 loss team is better than a 2 loss team...

Or do you think LSU should be in front of us with 3 losses.

Losing later matters - at least that is what some would say. LSU and Bama jumped ahead because we lost late. That is typically how it works.

Teams with ZERO losses were left out in 2017 (UCF) and 4 one loss teams were the top 4. Western Michigan was left out in 2016. If the number of losses was the most important criteria both of those teams should have been at least in the playoffs.

I don't believe any of the top 4 are truly locks and to say they are even if they were to get beat badly is crazy. But I do hope they feel that way as that is what gets teams in trouble - thinking they are in regardless and then they take a team for granted and find themselves on the outside looking in after a really bad loss.

OSU vs Michigan was by far the most viewed game of the season. Why would they want to avoid a rematch?

I think everyone agrees this is the only way. Everyone just also agrees that, right or wrong, ain’t no way they’re ranking us over Bama.
There is no way in Hell OSU should be in the playoffs--cupcake schedule and when they do play a quality team they got pounded. Play a few rounds in the SEC & see what happens.

I'm more than happy with the season and excited about a NY6 bowl.

I know we're not getting in the playoffs, but to comment on your bowl comment, Without Hooker and the possibility of several opting out of the bowl, I see us losing it. If that's the case I'd rather lose in the playoffs than lose a bowl.

But, I hope I'm wrong and we end on a high note. It's probably not as important as I think it is, but it's important.

Edit: and I'm not trying to argue, it's just my thoughts.
Why do you think we have several pull out of Orange Bowl? What about Clemson you don’t think they are going to have any out? I don’t think we will have many opt out. Maybe Tillman he does have legit injury. But maybe he gets real healthy and wants to play. I just don’t see us having many if any that opt out. But we will see.GBO

I don't know that any will, but I'm not going to be surprised if several do. You dont think Hyatt will?

And yes, Clemson could have several opt out too, but they've been recruiting at a higher level for a long time and probably have better replacements.

And maybe not, maybe I just don't feel as good about it as these guys that seem convinced we'll know Clemsons teeth out. Lol.

I see us as a fine running 4 cylinder engine that if one spark plug fouls out .....

I have never heard them say that injuries would be considered - regardless, I think Tennessee proved it can still score lots of points.

Rob Mullens, Oregon Athletic Director and member of the CFP Committee, speaking on injuries: “”Well, that’s an important piece,” Mullens said. “The committee will certainly be aware … what key players were in the games and what key players were missing and the key impacts on those games,” Mullens said. “It is an important factor. Obviously, there’s these subjective pieces — what was happening before that player was injured, who they were playing without their key player and what they looked like without their key player.””

That was 2019 - wasn't the committee different then? Regardless, TN proved folks wrong in terms of being able to handle Vandy without Hooker.

Rinse lather repeat. They recruit well, media hypes the hell out of em, plays a cupcake schedule, then chits the bed when it matters. Every damn season. 50% of what gets them top 5 preseason are those pricks at ESPN

We beat Vandy 56-0 without Hooker so based on that quote we’re good

CFP comittee looks closely at Ala vs UT common opponents. Rewards UT’s better SOS.
East was more dominant than west by far at least the top 3-4 teams this year - disregarding history.
UT won head to head - every recognized tiebreaker in the world looks there first. And ranks UT 6th tuesday night.
1.UGA
2. Mich
3. TCU
4. USC
5. OSU
6. Tenn
7. Ala
if that happens AND USC gets pounded by Utah (possible) and TCU gets walloped by KSU (possible) ….
Then
1. UGA
2. Mich
3. OSU
4. UT
5. Ala
UT is in…its a very longshot but not unbelievable.

The case for ut over bama
They didn’t play UGA or they would have 3 losses.
Aubie and Vandy similar check the records - we rolled 59-0. Bama only 20 something better.
Vandy was hot! Beat Fl and missou
Auburn did not
Who has bama beat actually? Not much
Almost nearly lost to texas and a&m
Tennessee rolled every game nearly - except usc and uga. Uga very good and #1. We screwed up one game only it was at usc and they were hot to start with and had the game of their lives!
Bama didn’t play a team on a roll with 2 top 10 wins.
They lost head to head - that is always number one tiebreaker rule. Even in sec standings!

As bad as I hate to say it we don't deserve to be taken above Bama. I know we beat them and we both have 2 losses but Bama didn't get blown out by 25 against an unranked team.

I mean South Carolina wasn't a terrible loss considering they are in the top 20. Tennessee lost to 2 good teams.

South Carolina is in the top 20 and they just beat a top 10 team in Clemson. They are a solid team.

OSU would literally have to lose again during championship week while not playing.

Hey…….if this could happen…..then yea Tennessee has a chance.

I get what you're saying and agree, but let's not overlook what CJH has done in year two is also "extremely beneficial for the perception of the program".

What he's done for this program in year two is the miracle....

Yup. Could’ve been better but is amazing regardless. Even if we had a perfect season and went on to win the NC there would still be things to improve. No team is perfect. Few programs go from 3-7 to 10-2 regular season in two years under a new staff. This kind of turnaround almost never happens.

As bad as I hate to say it we don't deserve to be taken above Bama. I know we beat them and we both have 2 losses but Bama didn't get blown out by 25 against an unranked team.

There’s also this straight from the CFP bylaws as a key principle:
  • Other relevant factors such as unavailability of key players and coaches that may have affected a team’s performance during the season or likely will affect its postseason performance.

But they did lose to a team we rolled by 20 plus at their place! Is that not comparable?
