You can't drop a game like we dropped a game and expect to be there. We didn't deserve the playoffs this year. I can accept that.
I can look at our team and say that we had some glaring weaknesses. We were far too undisciplined in our play, resulting in a ton of penalties. We had an extremely weak secondary. We didn't really have any screen game in our offense to offset heavy blitzes. We didn't do well when we were the favorite, as opposed to the underdog. Once we got the #1 ranking, we proved we couldn't stay there. We weren't ready for that stage.
That's okay. This is year 2. We are still recovering from portal hits, investigation penalties (scholarship reductions, etc.). We are technically still playing with many Pruitt players.
Imagine what we can do with a few Top 10 recruiting classes and our pick of portal players. Heup is the type of coach who *most* kids are going to want to play for. I'm not worried about it all self destructing because of hidden evils in the locker room, or poor leadership.
At this point, my biggest concern is losing assistant coaches, especially Golesh. I know it'll happen eventually (dude is a rising star, as is Halzle), but I don't want to lose them yet.
Good teams win a game they're not supposed to. Great teams win games they're not supposed to, and win the games they're supposed to. Championship teams win the games when the pressure is on.
This year, we were a good team. We were not a great team. And we were not a championship team.
That's okay. The potential to be a championship team is there. We have an offensive blueprint that is hard to stop with the right pieces. We need to improve our defense, but once we do? I definitely see us on a upwards trajectory. Good times are ahead.
I'm thankful for this season. It's been a long time since we've seen 10 wins. I enjoyed watching all 10 of them.
