Tennessee at Georgia Game 1 Thread - 7 PM - ESPN3

Georgia is the ideal state to recruit to. I don't buy any notion it hampers them. They get in state tuition and the the hope scholarship which is much better than tenn. It's a good mind IMO

I thought he would be killing it there already

this all leads back to how difficult it is to re-build a baseball program in the current climate of the SEC.....honestly, if I was a young up and coming coach my ego may say I can "rebuild it" however reality is you may be better off taking another job in another conference.....

The Hope scholarship helps big time although the eligibility requirements have become more stringent over time. Still, it's a great tool. Gone are the days though when you could offer an instate kid Hope plus 10%. Now it has to be at least 25%. Leaves a little less you can offer out of state guys.

No question Georgia should be better but the game has changed. I've been out of it for a few years now but still talk to a lot of people and they tell me it's totally different now.

Agree, although at today's salaries one can afford to fail so to speak. The salary increases in just the last 15 years are mind boggling.

Very good point

Rebuilding in the SEC is extremely difficult for sure

I don't think need based money should be banned just regulated.

I am fine with a pell grant range kid getting a high percentage of aid. 75% or so would be fair IMO

Any kid that doesn't qualify for the pell grant Shouldn't be able to get more than 50% in aid IMO

And kid with a family making over 150$ should get zero need based $
I don't get that at all, esp when tuition tops $50k a year. what you are effectively saying is you either have to be low middle class or lower or wealthy to attend Vandy.

Opportunity Vanderbilt was created in an effort to try to reduce or illuminate student debt driving career choices of students. To whatever degree they can use that money to ensure that that is the case I'm all for it. And I would be all for it at Tennessee, too.

Quite surprised he has not made more of an impact. He could very well be headed for his third straight losing season. It's all about recruiting. As bad a coach as Perno was, he could really recruit. The ideal setup at Georgia would be Strick as the HC and Perno as assistant and recruiter.

The state of Georgia is so heavily recruited by everyone it really takes a dynamic personality. You also cannot underestimate the impact of the four year transfer rule and the 25% minimum scholarship requirement has had. It's hampers the way schools in big talent pool states used to conduct business.

I think this applies to all sports at the University of Georgia. There is simply no good excuse for them to be mediocre really in any sport.

And yet, most of the time, Georgia is not competing for championships in any sport. There has to be something institutionally wrong there.

In baseball, I have often wondered if the presence of the Atlanta Braves really hurts both Georgia and Georgia Tech. Because the braves have such a thoroughly recruited farm club, and their scouts basically have kids going to school at the best high school programs in Atlanta. They are seeing in scouting these kids all year long from elementary

The kids that don't go Pro don't want to go to Georgia or Georgia Tech, because elite programs in the SEC and ACC are focusing on high ceiling pictures and preparing them for the majors. Look at the rosters of ACC & S EC schools, and count how many Cobb County pitchers are on those rosters.
