Tennessee - Florida "Rivalry"

Umm, clearly not. I mean have you seen my thread where the majority are declaring 5-7 with a loss to Vanderbilt successful? The definition of success gets a little broader here every year. We're a long way away from asking coaches to win meaningful games. It seems like, for most of volnation, all Butch Jones need do to be seen as successful is to continue showing up for work.

That's a little harsh don't you think? I look at the job he did this year with a team full of guys that weren't recruited for his system and came away impressed albeit disappointed we didn't reach .500. We did get a win over a top 15 team and damn near got another over a top ten team. That's not gonna fly next year though, I think it's reasonable to give a guy a pass in year one especially if he's trying to do something completely different than what the team has done historically. We've been a multiple/pro-style offense for 20 years and now we move to the spread, that o-line, as good as they are, wasn't built for a spread option, they were tailor made for the pro-style. The defense is another story, nothing is going to help that but recruiting and by my count this is a defense heavy class with 22 coming in on that side of the ball so far. On that subject, we have 16 of those 22 on the front seven, Jones wants to dominate the line of scrimmage, I like that. Anyway back to point, I wanted a bowl game, but I'll take what I can get and what I got was a win over So Car and for now that's good enough.

By the numbers yes the streak is longer. But lets face it we haven't been in a game with bama since 06 - minus the Mt. Cody debacle. The Florida games have at least been somewhat close until the 3rd quarter.

Interesting. I didn't know there was any other way to look at win streaks besides a win or a loss. :)

You guys have a new OC yet? What's the 'measure of success' for Muschamp next season (to prevent dismissal)?

Maybe we'll help get him fired for you guys lol

No OC yet. Don't think it will be an earth shattering hire.

Don't know the win total he needs.

If we have a great year, but are still inept on offense he is in trouble.

Improvement must happen on that side of the ball

Very well spoken. This year we beat a ranked opponent. Next year, in addition to bowl eligibility (and subsequent bowl win) we really need to beat UF. Not the end of the world if we don't, but if we don't I feel like it's gonna be quite some time before we really start doing good in football again..

Good point. I'd add this, we have to win a road game. We're going to a young team next year but that can't be an excuse. We have some winnable games at Scar, UGA and Vandy. We gotta win our state and beat a real team on the road. Just one guys opinion...

All it takes is 1 win and the rivalry will be renewed and all streaks go out the window. I have a feeling team #118 would like to help us with that

This topic has been discussed before and I've always known that Florida has always had our number - even in the 90's they were the team that always beat us; but today I just looked at the actual numbers and it's truly pathetic. I don't see how this is any more of a rivalry than Vandy/Kentucky vs UT.

Since 1976, in 28 meetings with the Gators we are 6-22 against the them. Our longest win streak during that period is TWO while the gators have beaten us 4 & 5 times in a row, and currently 9 times in a row.

Even in all of Fulmer's greatness, Spurrier always had his number. I know we all hate Alabama, and I know that with our two consecutive losses to Vandy they're the first and foremost 'problem' to be taken care of - but does everyone agree that for Butch to be seen as successful here (in the long run) that he not only needs to win avg 9 a year but beat the damn gators year in year out once and for all!?

First and foremost I believe we need to stop this rivalry BS. Listen, we need to stop mentioning any team in the SEC, or on this planet, in the same sentence as rivalry.
The mentality that will push us forward is that every team we play is a rivalry and that every team is to fear the name of Tennessee.:yu:
GO VOLS!

The only sport that UT is competitive against Florida right now is basketball where we have a winning career mark against Donovan and it will turn around in football in due time....... Florida can pretty much choose from within the state for their players while UT has to go nationwide.

Typically that is correct but thanks to Butch, FSU, and Miami, this year it is the other way around

A true rivalry IMO is when you would rather beat that team than any team on your schedule and that team also looks at you in the same way. Think Auburn /Bama have that oklahoma and Texas. We have rivalries but no true rivalry. The only team on our schedule that would rather beat us than anybody is Vandy and their way down on our list. Florida has a rivalry with Georgia/cocktail party and Florida State we are probably 3rd on their list. JMO..We have no true hate/hate rivalry.

As a Gator fan, based on the current state of affairs in Gainesville right now, I see no reason to think we make it 10 in a row. We might, but if you ask me it would be due more to UT ineptitude than UF being anything to write home about.

OP,

Games like this past year are the reason I'm convinced UT is cursed against the Gators. Yes, they were good on D, but they weren't as good as we made them look. That game was served up to UT on a silver platter. Their QB was gone in the 1st quarter. (I never want to see kids get hurt no matter the team but it happened.)

UF had to bring in a qb that had never taken a snap before in a game! The idiots on here will say that played to UF's advantage because UT wasn't prepared for him. What a load of crap! There was a reason he had never taken a snap and we made him a Heisman front-runner that day as UT tends to do with back-ups.

UF is clearly down right now and they MUST win that game in Knoxville next year.

The curse will be broken next year at home.

As in it's one sided. I see what you're saying but that's debatable. I think there are more Bama fans that hate us more than they hate Auburn than the other way around.

Seriously LOL'ed, but I think many people are just giving him a pass until next season at minimum. Some won't truly begin to criticize (ever?) until season 3.

If it weren't for his stellar recruiting class I would be seriously concerned. But given his past record of (for the most part) winning and this 2014 recruiting class, I'm still hopeful. I'm hoping our concerns are personnel problems and not coaching staff problems. Only time can tell unfortunately, and we're all damn sick of waiting that's for sure..

Well said.

Florida was Fulmers achilles like Bama was Majors. Fulmer always got uptight Florida week because Spurrier was always in his head.

I'm convinced we could start going 12-1 every year, compete for SEC and NCs on an annual basis.... and that one damn loss will be to Florida. We haven't, we can't, we won't ever beat Florida with any consistency....ever. I don't care who the coach is.

Might like to but it's not happening. Not a chance UT beats Fla next year.

We lost seven in a row, including Ga Southern. This team has a lot to show before they should be favored over any SEC team.

You guys won 4 games. Lost to freaking Ga Southern and Vanderbilt..... one of those 4 wins was a beat down, with a backup qb who sucked vs everyone else, of who?..... you betcha.....Tennessee.

You guys should and will be favored to beat UT in Neyland next year..... and there's not even .00001% doubt in my mind that you'll win...again. Death. Taxes. And Florida kicking the crap out of UT every year.
