Tennessee - Florida "Rivalry"

While Florida has typically come out the winner, the Tennessee-Florida game was almost always very competitive up until 2008.

The scores since the game became annual in 1990 to Tennessee's fall from relevance in 2008:

1990 TN 45 FL 3
1991 TN 18 FL 35
1992 TN 31 FL 14
1993 TN 34 FL 41
1994 TN 0 FL 31
1995 TN 37 FL 62
1996 TN 29 FL 35
1997 TN 20 FL 33
1998 TN 20 FL 17 (OT)
1999 TN 21 FL 23
2000 TN 23 FL 27
2001 TN 34 FL 32
2002 TN 13 FL 30
2003 TN 24 FL 10
2004 TN 30 FL 28
2005 TN 7 FL 16
2006 TN 20 FL 21
2007 TN 20 FL 59
2008 TN 6 FL 30

Most of those games, with the exception of 1990, 1994, 2002 and 2008, were hard-fought, tense games. The scores of the 1995 and 2007 games were lopsided, but the games were competitive (we were up by a touchdown at the half in 1995, and down by a touchdown at one point in the 3rd quarter in 2007).

I think the emotions lingering from these games are part of what makes it a rivalry, not so much the W or L record.

It is a rivalry because if you look at the scores you will see that the games have been close and sometimes the better team didn't win the game and sometimes the breaks didn't go our way especially in 95, 97 games in Gainsville. Comparing our record against Florida with Vandy/UK is just silly IMO. We beat the tail off those guys for years in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. I think is was like 25-26 years straight we won for both of those. During the 80s early 90s it was Bama and during the 90s-00s it was Florida. Things will change around and we will be beating Florida like we did Bama in the 90s-2000s..

I don't know why these rivalry threads keep coming up. Alabama is our biggest rivalry, followed by Florida. Not Ga,not Vandy. I don't care who you work with, what fans you see at family events and argue with, We want to beat Bama first, followed closely by Florida. Fact.

Thread is not about who is the biggest rival. You should read the op before the all the soapbox standing.

Your right. I guess I just was venting a little from other threads I'd read before. I read a lot on here but really don't do any posting. Prolly should keep it that way.

1996 game was not a hard-fought, tense game. It was over at the half after Manning threw 4 first half ints and Florida led 35-0. Florida basically let off the gas in the second half and UT scored 29 pts. But this game was NEVER in question....it was a route. Just sayin.

In the '95 game, we were up 37-13 after Peyton led a very impressive like 3 play scoring drive to open the second half. Then the wheels came off after Nylo Sylvan and Jay Graham constantly laid the ball on the ground. Florida scored 49 unanswered points.... Route!

Next season game in Neyland will be as big as ever. Muschamp and CBJ doing there best to rebuild struggling teams in the SEC. It's going to be a war.

The facts have been the team that rushes the ball best wins. All new Oline and Dline. I'm not too optimistic that we beat them next year. They tried to give us the game this year. We didn't want it, thanks we'll take another loss please. That game made my eyes bleed.

This.

That ended up being one of the most misleading scores I've ever seen. UT's last touchdown was with about 10 seconds left as well.

Also, you can't really go by scores alone either; some of those scores that seem close when Florida won, actually watching the game Florida seemed pretty much in control . The 2005 game for instance seems close at 16-7, but UT's offense couldn't do jack that night.

The 1997 game also didn't feel much like UT had a real shot to win, as Florida controlled the game.

Next year's game in Knoxville is def a must win.. I have only seen us beat UF once since I have been following the team.

Boca - I am with you. We are under a Gator curse. They play their best game against us every single year.

Last year playing us was nowhere near their best game.

This topic has been discussed before and I've always known that Florida has always had our number - even in the 90's they were the team that always beat us; but today I just looked at the actual numbers and it's truly pathetic. I don't see how this is any more of a rivalry than Vandy/Kentucky vs UT.

Since 1976, in 28 meetings with the Gators we are 6-22 against the them. Our longest win streak during that period is TWO while the gators have beaten us 4 & 5 times in a row, and currently 9 times in a row.

Even in all of Fulmer's greatness, Spurrier always had his number. I know we all hate Alabama, and I know that with our two consecutive losses to Vandy they're the first and foremost 'problem' to be taken care of - but does everyone agree that for Butch to be seen as successful here (in the long run) that he not only needs to win avg 9 a year but beat the damn gators year in year out once and for all!?

Agree!...so ready to rid ourselves of florida jinx

People are giving KBVol a hard time, when each and every one of you to some extent feels the exact same way. We have lost to some awful Florida teams in the last 9 years.

I have ZERO confidence in us beating Florida next year. I'm done having confidence in that game. It won't happen again until we beat them at least 3 times. If you were to tell me we were 11-1 next year, and Florida was 1-11, I would very much assume the "1" is Florida.

We may have a great year next year, and an even better year in 2015. But regardless, we will lose to Florida both years.

Prove me wrong team 118. For the love all things holy Jesus Lord in Heaven please prove me wrong.

Personally, I hate the Gators more than any other 2 teams combined. FROM THEIR PUNK FANS, to that irritating Gator Chop to their whinny coaches to their vandalizing visiting teams cars , they are the worst. A Gator loss in any sport is as good as a Vol Win.

It's just the way he vents his frustrations. We all are frustrated with losing to UF but why be so negative about it? What's done is done. It sucks but it is what it is. Also why be so negative about next years game before its played? "UF wins by double digits. Book it." Seriously? Why not have just a little bit of faith in team 118. That's what gets me.

"...Florida has always had our number"

" - even in the 90's they were the team that always beat us;"

"Even in all of Fulmer's greatness, Spurrier always had his number."

Dumb, inaccurate and wimpy statements are dumb, inaccurate and wimpy. You are shameful. Turn in your forum name now.

UT OPENED the 90's with a win and won TWO more. In 1998 UT won a national championship undefeated.

Spurrier lost the last Florida regular season game he ever coached.....to Fulmer. Spurrier lost the last Florida SEC game he ever coached......to Fulmer. Spurrier lost the last game he ever coached in the swamp.......to Fulmer.

From wiki: " The game, as painful as it was for the Gators, would later cause more heartache as it served as Steve Spurrier's last home game as Gator football coach. Spurrier quickly resigned his job as HBC at Florida...."

Your exaggeration by using the word "always" repeatedly makes you appear as a wimpy whiner.

A real Vol would have known these stats. A real Vol For Life wouldn't be so wimpy.

I at least hope your panties are orange.

Call me a blind homer, but I don't care how long the streak is. It is a ****ing rivalry, and our fan base should not "admit" to a damn thing. We will not concede to anybody, and saying it isn't a rivalry is just that: conceding. **** that. I hope our team doesn't share the attitude many of you seem to have.

Hate to tell you, but they way our team has played these last few years shows that they are indeed "conceding."

It's our own fault.

Hambone and company destroyed our football team at a time when the East has been at its weakest since the split. If Mike Hamilton is not our AD, we are wondering if UT-Florida is a rivalry except we own the current streak against Florida.

I agree beating Bama and the Gators are top priorities for the Vols.

You are right about Florida. No matter how much they suck in a given year, they always beat us. I think it would help us if we played them later in the year....
