Tennessee Lady Vol News

We’re a 4 seed in this bracketology.

Women's Basketball Bracketology

I wouldn’t mind that bracket either. St. Louis has been hot so have to be careful in that first game. They have won 12 of their last 13 or so.

I’d take a matchup with Oklahoma for sure, they cannot guard us in the paint. If you don’t defend them they can shoot you out of the building but if they hit a little bit of defense they aren’t very tough.

Plus, we’d be at home.

Because I love stats and I hate this week of waiting for the bracket reveal, here are some #s on how some of our Lady Vols grew their games this year:
  • Rickea Jackson: Career high FG% (by far, 55.2% vs. her next-best 48.3%) and FT% (79.8% vs. 73.0%). For the first time in her career she was in the top 100 in the entire NCAA in points per play, PER, win shares, offensive win shares, and playing offensive rating. She also led the SEC in points per 40 minutes and points per play. Rickea is dominant!
  • Jordan Horston: Also careers highs in FG% (43.6% vs. 39.4%) and FT% (73.3%) - as well as points per shot attempt and points per play, and a career-high 1.2 blocks per game. She was also in the top 100 in the NCAA in PER, and 5th in the SEC in assist %. Definitely her most efficient season.
  • Jordan Walker: Had her best season at Tennessee in most categories, including FG%, FT%, points per play, points per shot attempt, steals, A/TO ratio, FT rate, and PER. She was 4th in the SEC in assists and 5th in A/TO ratio!
  • Tess Darby: Also had her best season at Tennessee in most categories, including FG%, 3pt. %, rebounds, steals, points per play, points per shot attempt, FT rate, turnover %, PER, and win shares. She was in the top 100 in the entire NCAA in points per play, effective FG%, and player offensive rating (and her low turnover rate is just outside the top 100). She was in the top 10 in the SEC in 3PM, 3pt. %, points per play, points per shot attempt, effective FG%, turnover %, foul rate, and player offensive rating. It's time to acknowledge Tess is elite at what she does and makes very few mistakes on either end of the court (low turnover and foul rates)!
  • Karoline Striplin: Unsurprisingly, she improved in almost every category, and finished in the top 25 in the SEC in FG%, 3pt. %, and effective FG%.
  • Jasmine Powell: Though most of her numbers were down from her time at Minnesota, she had a career high A/TO ratio of 2.0 (103rd in the NCAA). She was in the top 10 in the SEC in assists per 40 minutes (2nd), assist % (2nd), A/TO ratio (8th), and FT rate (9th).
  • Tamari Key: Though she only played 9 games (all with blood clots in her lungs), for the games she did play (against some of the toughest teams on our schedule), she was still in the top 100 in the entire NCAA in FG%, effective FG%, points per play, points per shot attempt, blocks, block %, and player offensive rating.
As a side note, for everyone who says, "we don't have a point guard," it's true that we don't have point guards who are efficient scorers, but their assists and A/TO are really quite good.

Pretty Holly....Pretty Holly....Pretty Holly!!!

Oh wait, that post shows player development and improvement. Moving on...

Thanks Travis929, I like stats and hate waiting, too. Was wondering, did you have stats on Jillian? I thought she improved through the year, too.

Yes! For some reason Her Hoops Stats hasn't merged her Georgia and Tennessee seasons into the same player so I missed seeing the direct comparison.

Interestingly, many of her stats were nearly identical to her freshman season at Georgia, though her biggest improvement was in rebounding: 2.5 to 4.4 per game, 8.0 to 10.6 rebounds per 40 minutes, 9.9% to 12.4% offensive rebound percentage, 11.3% to 15.9% defensive rebound percentage, and 10.6% to 14.2% total rebound percentage. Her assists per 40 minutes were up (1.1 to 1.3), and turnovers per 40 minutes were down (3.5 to 3.3), so her A/TO improved from 0.32 to 0.39. Also, her win shares doubled from 0.9 to 1.8. She was top 15 in the SEC this season in offensive rebounds per 40 minutes, rebounds per 40 minutes, offensive rebound %, and total rebound %. She didn't really play enough in SEC games last season to be ranked in any category.

I also didn't include Sara on the last list, but she improved in 3pt. %, FT% (to 69% to 90%), turnovers and steals per 40 minutes, points per play, FT rate, defensive rebound %, total rebound %, turnover %, A/TO ratio, steal %, and player offensive rating.

Hope Sarah sees this. Nice to know she improved even though it looked like she had a really tough season. She’s a great player, just needs to find that joy in the game again. She hasn’t been having any fun with it lately.

I really think that the coaches have asked Sarah to be a facilitator more than a scorer because of additional scoring threats and she has gotten into her own head. It looks like instead of being instinctive on the court she is thinking "Do I shoot or do I pass". It is a year of growth for her. The year Sarah is having happens to a lot of players as their roles evolve. I'm sure in the Missouri game when Jordan was out, she was asked to be a scorer that night and she came out and had a pretty good game offensively. That's my take on this season for her. She will continue to improve in an expanded role.

Coach Sam is in Spain on a "business trip" according to my social media watching game buddy. Could be checking in on Marta (which would be really nice of them) or possibly checking out a recruit? Recruiting is her business.
