Tennessee Lady Vol News

A while back I commented about how I cannot understand people on here thinking Tennessee would not make the tournament. They clearly were tournament bound. I also mentioned that higher seeds would not be looking forward to playing them in an early tournament game. Most teams are lucky to have one goto player, while Tennessee has two bonafide goto players. The other thing I mentioned was that LSU scheduling such a ridiculously weak nonconference schedule would eventually hurt them. They’ve basically played three tough teams, Tennessee twice and USC, losing two out of those three games. I mentioned back then that I felt Tennessee was actually better than LSU, and would beat them on a neutral court. If the committee does not punish LSU for having such a weak schedule, they’re doing a huge injustice for teams that did schedule tougher.

I knew we would and guess we jumped a couple of four seeds as well with that win.

If we get a 4 seed, we for sure wouldn't be in SCs bracket. Two teams in the same conference aren't slated to matchup till the E8.

That would set us up for a solid run. Here's hoping.

Even if we got a 5, we still wouldn't be in SCs bracket. Still great. Hosting is ideal though.

Creme's updated bracketology actually kept UT a 5 seed after saying they would move up with a win

I will wait to see the updated NET but given our metrics I have to think we are a 4 seed now if we can stay within 20 of SC (which is far from a given)

I am curious to see what the Ap and Coaches polls say this week. Wonder if they will list us as a ranked team finally. They obviously don't look at any of the metrics that the selection committee looks at.

Dude has no clue. Needs to stick to hucking medical devices. I still can’t figure why he is the ESPN “bracketologist” or why that is really even a thing.

I’d much rather hear Draya and company discuss their thoughts. At least they watch the games and know what they are talking about.

We were barely out of it coming into the week so I would say with 2 wins its assured especially if we are competitive with SC

Creighton could do us a huge favor and knock Villanova off today. It's too bad DePaul couldn't hold on to pull off the upset yesterday. We could also use some help from Texas if they falter early in the Big 12 tournament.

With the conference tournament done, I think it's a good moment to look at the team's advanced stat rankings for the year and how it compares to the last couple of years. I prefer Her Hoop Stats as I think they do a good job with their rating systems.

Overall rating:
2018-19 (Holly's last year): 42nd
2019-20 (Kellie's first year): 44th
2020-21: 24th
2021-22: 24th
2022-23: 10th

Offensive rating:
2018-19: 42nd
2019-20: 61st
2020-21: 33rd
2021-22: 43rd
2022-23: 14th

Defensive rating:
2018-19: 72nd
2019-20: 31st
2020-21: 19th
2021-22: 10th
2022-23: 15th

This season is also the best in the last 5 years for FG%, FT%, 2pt. %, points per scoring attempt, points per play, free throw rate, A/TO ratio (first time it's been above 1). Maybe unsurprisingly, most of the best seasons for defensive and rebounding stats were last year with a healthy Tamari Key, but this year was still the second best for most of them.

If you prefer Massey, here are our rankings:
2018-19: 34th
2019-20: 30th
2020-21: 20th
2021-22: 16th
2022-23: 15th

Point is, we don't know what next year's team is going to look like yet (or how this one will end in the NCAA's!), but it's pretty objectively clear things are moving all around in the right direction. It's refreshing taking a step back to see these steady improvements -- and remembering that this was our first SECT final game in 8 years! One step at a time.

This kind of factual context is not what we are looking for. We want to continue to say "clever" things like calling Coach Harper---Pretty Holly.

Ranked #23 in AP following SEC Tourney

Revisiting this.

As it sits, I think RJ is the clear frontrunner for this award especially after her performance last weekend. A good NCAA run would seal the deal.
I think there's some fan voting involved in this as well as a committee? Whoever wins the fan vote gets 1 extra committe vote.

Ashley Joens is RJ's main competition IMO. She's going to be tough to beat. She's won it the last two years. Her stats are slightly better, 21 pts and 9 rebs vs RJ's 19.6 pts and 6.5 reb. RJ has much better efficiency though, shooting 55% (!) fg and 31% 3 pts. Joens shoots 41% fg and 34% 3 pt.

Haley Jones at Stanford is probably the best known, but her stats are way behind RJ and Joens.

One of many reasons to hope for a nice little tourney run for us.

I can’t figure why Haley is up for this award. She plays the guard almost 100% of the time. You rarely see her make a post move. I think to be considered a forward you have to have at least some back to the basket to your game.

Joens will be tough to beat but Kea deserves it so much. I’ll be voting like crazy so she gets than fan vote lol
