Tennessee Lady Vol News

USF has one of the better point guard three point shooters in the country this season. Our offense always is a cause for concern right now going into these type games. I always feel we can hold the opponent under 60, but worry if we can score 60 ourselves. Not much improvement in our three point game this season going to hurt us in a lot of games I fear.

Saw that, she was 6 of 8 for 3 pointers in their last game. At least we know that ahead of time, maybe we’ll glue someone on her. She’s 5’10”, Miles is 5’4, Wynn is 6’, and Horston is 6’2”. Unfortunately, they have several who can score, but she may need special attention.

Their tallest girl is 6’4”, of course if she can jump, that makes her taller, they have 2 others that are 6’2”, Tamari needs to have a good game, and score as well.

Horston showed in our last game, (and her first for this season), that she can take over a game, she promised to clean up the turnovers, I believe she can do that, if I never see another no-look pass, I’m fine with that, the only one used to those passes is Tamari, and they’re hard to catch for anyone.

As for our Offense, we still have had no time to rework it in practice since losing Rae. Our last game, 3 point shooters were Sara 1 of 2, Tess 2 of 6, and Horston 1of 5, would like to see Sara shoot more period, she’s also good at rebounds and put backs under the basket. Alexus was 2 of 12 field goals in the last game, hope that improves.

This next game we’ll emphasize Defense, and our Offense is improving.

Survive and advance.

GO LADY VOLS!!!

Alexus looked really gassed in the last game, which probably affected her jumper. Troy likes to do their hockey substitutions to keep fresh legs on the court at all time. She probably hasn't had to play extended continuous minutes like that in a while. She'll probably need to prepare herself to play long periods without a break, especially while Rae is out.

At one time late in the first quarter she thought she was going out and Kellie pushed her back in. She is definitely not in the shape she will be in on down the road. She played about 25 at Troy and never 10 minutes in a row.

The difference with Troy is the speed in which they play though. They want to get up 100 shots a game if they can. They would constantly be needing to sub at that pace.

That’s crazy our new strength and conditioning coach needs to be questioned 😂

Practice shape isn't the same as game shape. You can't simulate that initial adrenaline boost in practice or scrimmages. That's why shooting is crappy at the beginning of the year too. Must acclimate to game pressure.

I believe she had a minor injury before the season? I thought I remember coach Kellie saying she was out of workouts for a little bit just a few weeks before season started.

Few players or teams are in tip-top condition at the very beginning of the season. Now, if preparing for basketball season were the ONLY thing on these athletes' plates, we could expect them to not get fatigued. Everyone would probably be surprised at how little actual time the NCAA allows for teams to practice and condition running up to the season. And we may think, "But they can run ON THEIR OWN!" And that's true -- but depending on each student's individual situation, there are always going to be some who may not have a lot of extra time in their schedules to do much conditioning outside the official workouts. And like I said, the kids aren't getting all that many hours a week to get into tip-top shape, and early in the year the staff is constantly having to stop action in order to teach. We've got quite a few players new to the system -- several new to the college experience -- so the teaching takes more time and slows things down. I expect it'll take a few weeks for everyone to round it out. No worries here!

P.S. What ticks me off is PROFESSIONAL players who are dragging sometimes early in the season. Unless she or he has been injured and hasn't been able to maintain conditioning, their whole dang JOBS are to be in top condition. I suspect there are way too many out-of-shape players coming into WNBA training camps, and there's no excuse for that.

We went down one Texas jumped to 12th and Arizona way up also.

I’m still pissed at Texas for last season when we fly all the way there and they cancelled 30 minutes before tip. Then played two days later.

They just didn’t want to play because some of their better players were going to be out with Covid protocols. Rubbed me the wrong way they were allowed to do that. I hope we beat them this season.

I believe we can as well. Their inside game is weak this season. Moore is talented but she’s a freshman and wants to face up or dribble. She got the ball taken from her numerous times against Stanford.

We match up better with Harmon than Stanford does. Our defense is good and I think our offense is abut equal to Texas. I think it’ll be a game in the 60s.

At least we'll have a few days to get the energy up before we play them. Everygame the freshmen Puckett and Miles play they will get better and less afraid to make some plays. Missing Burrell has really hurt us on the offensive end. I'm hoping to see a better offense tonight. We will need it best offensive team we have played thus far.

With so many games, including a road game, I don't know how the staff will have had enough time yet to work with the players on a re-worked offense that doesn't include Rae. They MAY have introduced some options, but there obviously hasn't been enough practice time to expect great chemistry yet.

Volfan2012, I realize you weren't expecting a re-worked offense, but more of a better-shooting offense. Me too! I hope the shooting improves as the chemistry improves as they adjust to playing without their top scorer. Could take a few more games to get there. Hope not, but it could.

Harmon plays the 2G and Allen-taylor plays the PG spot, If you notice 6-1 Hull was matched up against Harmon and could not check her. Also Harmon really get off the floor when she shoots her jump shot so blocking it can be a problem. Both Harmon and Taylor are very quick also Stanford had 20 turnovers in that game.

Yeah I suspect Miles will play a lot on that game and will likely guard either her or Matharu. Whoever is in. They are the players that hurt Stanford. They couldn’t check Matharu in the fourth and she knocked down several 3s. We actually have better options to guard the PG this season.

I’m wondering if Wilson has a mild injury or something. She just didn’t seem to be much help on either end for Stanford. She played well last season and was PAC-12 co defensive player of the year. Was shocked she hasn’t made more of a jump this season.

They cancelled the game on 12/13 two hours before tip due to contact tracing issues on the Texas team. They did the right thing in the middle of the pandemic.

Their next game on 12/17 was cancelled against Kansas due to Covid issues on the Kansas team.

They then played on 12/18 after the contact tracing issues were remediated. That's five days later.

As for Wilson i`m not sure if if she has mild injury. Don`t get me wrong Stanford had a lot of open 3`s but just could not knock them down. Also 6-5 Ashten Prechtel i get it she likes the 3 ball, But in a game like this no one your size get on the low blocks and go to work ?.
