From coaches hired this year, UT is listed as one of the toughest rebuilding jobs.

New coaches face different kinds of spring challenges -- college football - ESPN

Butch Jones doesn't have that luxury at Tennessee. Jones won at Central Michigan and he won at Cincinnati (50-27, .649). But Jones inherits fans who still think of their program as a traditional power, even as the Volunteers haven't won more than seven games since 2007. Not only that, a Tennessee team playing under its fourth head coach in six seasons faces a schedule with five top-10 teams (at Oregon, at Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, at Alabama).

But Jones had his choice. He said no to Colorado before he said yes to Tennessee

i am ok with our fan base having high expectations but i agree with the overall point: U T is tough bc of bad and unstable senior leadership in the university, tough state for recruting, and we play in the toughest conference in the country...my first point is reasons one through ten on the ten reasons why UT is tough however

Only problem I have with the article - "But Jones inherits fans who still think of their program as a traditional power."

Yes, Tennessee is still a Traditional power, hence the word "tradition." Boise and Oregon are not traditional powers. Had he said "current national power" I would have understood leaving out Tennessee. But tradition is tradition and it takes more than 6 lousy years to kill that. just ask notre lame, even if they stunk up the BCS game, they were able to get back to the top with the right coach.

Poor, poor choice of words by the writer.

"Are a Traditional Power".

Depends how you interpret those words.

Traditionally, we have been a power. We have tradition. We are not a power. So, how do you interpret?

Are we now (still) a traditional power if we are not now a power?

Someone tell the writer that Tennessee is a top ten program traditionally. We are in the top ten in most victories. So he can shut up about us not being a traditional power house! GBO!

Wait ... If a tree fell in the woods ...

do you really think what happened to Tennessee ten years ago matters to this team? Or any of the recruits coming other than the actual legacies? This thread is the prime example of what Masiel was writing about.

Look at this way, Peyton Manning was already on campus when this year's incoming Freshman were born.

UT isn't in the upper tier of college football in 2013. It's time to get back up there.

Ivan Maisel is daft. Every traditional power has a fan base that still regards it as a traditional power even if it's recent record hasn't been up to par. Just ask ND fans before last season if they still considered it a traditional power.

Our program was in turmoil ,because of a bad situation with Lane Kiffin and a poor hire in Dooley. We (Tennessee) are still recognizable as a college football powerhouse in terms of Tradition, Talent, Facilities, Stadium, players in the NFL etc. Tennessee has all the resources to be a great team year in and year out, we just needed a good coach. Time will tell, but I think we finally have that.

truth.

this is what makes the sec so tough. most fan bases won't tolerate anything but success, because at least part of their fan base remembers a time when they were on top.

there are plenty of arkansas folks who believe they should be competing for national championships

Jones is making it look easy, how many 5 and 7 teams from last year have a top 6 recruiting class going.

Well, if the game was played on paper and not on the field I might agree with you. Let's see how easy he makes it look at Oregon, UF, and Bama.

the 2014 class excluded, where/how does the bold fit in with this team compared to the rest of the SEC?
