Tennessee - Memphis cancelled

I haven’t been able to follow this. I know Memphis backed out at the last minute. What’s the backstory on it? What is it people are aging Penny lied about?
Memphis backed out at the last minute “due to covid protocol” - because 2 players tested positive the morning of the game, and apparently all but 4-5 of the rest of their players are unvaccinated.

Earlier in the season penny said about 90% of their players are vaccinated. He’s been pushed on this now and backtracked, claiming he “misspoke” and didn’t really know how many were vaccinated.

Also earlier this year their entire team attended a game at MSG that required proof of vaccination…

Some of their fans are more pissed about the team lying about their status while regularly interacting with the public, some are more pissed about penny using covid as an excuse not to play us. They’re all embarrassed. Maybe it blows over but this really could be the beginning of the end for penny.

Apparently Memphis has a new administrative team. They are going to have to be very “political” in their responses. If they take a stance, the newbies could lose their job. Just a week ago, most fans were irate with Hardaway and the losses. How this plays out will be interesting.

Again, the Memphis trolls have disappeared. Maybe they have some morals. If so, kudos to them.

Kudos for Disappearing or having morals 😄

My one question. 30k to go to Nashville? WTF

One charter bus to go on a 150 mile round trip for a high school football team was 2500 dollars in October. Large scale travel for the team, cheerleaders, support staff, etc etc gets costly in a hurry when you add in food and lodging, plus equipment that probably requires a large truck to transport.

Just the hotel accommodations were probably $10000, minimum, assuming something like ~25 rooms x $200/nt x 2 nights (?). Cheaper, obviously, if they only stayed one night.

For guaranteed reservations the numbers go up. Cancellations are built into higher rates. Also, other rooms reserved for”dignitaries” and the like. I think 30 grand is the low end.

And $200/night is very conservative. We attended a seminar at the Omni in early November, and the conference rate was $250. I stayed in Franklin this past Friday night to avoid the downtown rates, and it was still $175.

Word of advice, Franklin is one of the last Nashville areas you want to go to in order to save a buck or two.

Well, it's convenient, and I know that area better than anything else. Coming from Memphis, I am not staying anywhere north or east of downtown. While I was complaining, we did get more than a regular room (with a sleeper sofa), so it really was pretty nice. Hotel rates in general have gone up like everything else.

I'm usually not one to pay for such options, but I'm gonna give myself a Bruin for deciding to buy purchase protection for my LSU tickets (plane & game tix). Hopefully I won't have to exercise those options, but now the sting from adding it on is definitely gone.

Fair enough. Sounds like it worked out really well.

A class action lawsuit against Memphis should be appropriate. Their actions were egregious.

Yeah, I figured I was being pretty conservative by quoting Holiday Inn Express level prices. Not sure where the team stayed, but it wouldn't surprise me if the prices were substantially higher.

I don't think UT fans can say that Memphis has little bro syndrome when people post stuff like this. My goodness, this whole issue has made UT fans look like a bunch of cry babies. Yeah, it's crappy of Memphis to do, but let's move on and act like they're beneath us.

Although it’s a lot of fun, we really don’t have to do anything else. The Memphis media, national media and the coaching world are taking care of it. 1Cent is getting raked over the coals something fierce. Having loads of fun just watching the meltdown.

Now that we know more, it is quite astonishing what happened. The local media is roasting the program and rightfully so. The game could have been played if more Memphis players were vaccinated, and a vast majority of P5 coaches made it a priority. Penny and the administration have jeopardized their entire season. Even national media members have commented that it’s astonishing.

Memphis deserves all criticism it is getting right now regardless where it’s coming from.

So you’re confirming what I said?

And by the way, if you listen to Memphis fan calling in the radio shows down here today, all UT fans everywhere are the second coming of David Duke and are all in the KKK because of our feelings about the U of M and Memphis in general. I know you are all broken up by that and you heathens need to mend your ways. Otherwise Memphis fan is never going to invite you over for dinner. I know that I am personally so upset over those accusations that I won’t be able to sleep tonight but I have to suck it up and move forward.

Need to find the Salvation Army kettle and repent
