I’m confused why have Dodge on the team if she’s going to redshirt as I think someone mentioned before?
This is going to get lost in the game discussion, but I want to answer it again anyway for those that missed it the first time.
Dodge was always going to be able to graduate early, but there was no scholarship money available and she wasn’t going to walk-on just to get a jump on next year.
Scholarship money opened up when Donihoo retired. At that point in the season, you’re not able to add it to another player already receiving aid. If you give a walk-on the scholarship, then the current rules require you to keep her at that scholarship level going forward, which changes your math in future years.
So why doesn’t she play since she’s already here? Two reasons: First, it’s virtually impossible for a kid straight out of high school to play any sport at this level. With softball especially, the roles are pretty well defined after fall ball, but asking someone who just stepped on to campus to compete with players that have had seven months of strength and conditioning, plus seven weeks of fall practice isn’t realistic. Second, UT plans out its roster four years out, so they’re planning on her playing a role 2025-2028. Moving her fourth year from 2028 to a 2024 where she would only play spot duty completely changes her future and pushes over a bunch of other dominos.
