Tennessee Transfer Portal Targets

Because you didn't address your most glaring need. It would be like building a new Mustang from scratch and having the nicest wheels, tires, paint, and all the interior bells and whistles, but having a Ford Focus engine in it. You can dress up every part of the team, but failing to address your biggest weakness is not good. And sure, you can probably get around with that 4-banger under the hood, but is that really what you intended to have when you custom built a muscle car?
I would reserve judgment about it being our biggest need…I don’t think the staff told Glover no thanks just because they felt like it, I think they clearly don’t feel like PG is our most glaring need no matter how many fans want to say it is. Only time will tell who’s right though.

I’m not a doctor idk, that’s why I asked..:he’s a month removed, maybe they are able to gauge his rehab timeline a month out and he’s tracking for a quick recovery, not sure. I admittedly haven’t watched a second of USC-Upstate either, but simply looking at the stats and the measurements listed it’s also quite possible Gainey played some PG there.
Gainey is a great kid. Well-spoken, a leader (attended the Big South Leadership Conference), and a really talented basketball player. He will remind you of Jordan McRae as a player, though a less explosive version. Quick release, can shoot off-balance, deep range, can create his own shot off the dribble, can drive the ball, and defends well at the Big South level. He isn't a PG, though, and certainly not at the SEC level. As for scoring, I wouldn't expect more than peak Skylar McBee numbers from him at Tennessee, and if he gives you anything more than that, you chalk it up as an absolute bonus from a guy you have nearly zero investment in.

I’m not claiming he’s coming in here to light it up, and if I recall McBee did get stuck playing some PG so maybe there’s some similarities there after all lol

Or, like me, they just don't think Glover is any good. 🤷‍♂️

Between him and the unknown of Dilione at PG, I'd just as soon take my chances with Dilione ND use the scholarship elsewhere. The staff would absolutely take Perry, bit seemingly won't take Glover. That tells me they see a need at PG, but aren't going to just take any warm body to fill it.

Glover=warm body, to me, and I'd bet dollars to doughnuts the staff feels the same way.

For what it's worth... the 2.3 EcoBoost engine the 4th generation Focus could have in it was debuted in the 2015 Mustang, producing over 300 HP & LB-FT of torque, It was even stronger in the Ford Focus RS ;)

I get the concern, but I think the staff has recruited the guard position pretty well. I think unless it's a clear upgrade at PG they see no point in just adding a body there.

BJ Edwards was a top 20 PG nationally and now has a full season under his belt
Freddie Dilione was a top 10 CG nationally and has half a season under his belt
Cameron Carr is a top 10 SG nationally
Jahmai Mashack was a top 75 player nationally and will be entering year 3
DJ Jefferson was a top 30 SF nationally and has a full season under his belt

You really just need 1 or 2 of them to be comfortable bringing the ball up if Santi returns and then once ZZ is healthy you'll be a better team overall. I think if Jordan Gainey had any other name people would be excited based on his size & stats.

The staff passed on bringing in Perry on a visit in favor of Ledlum and Knecht, not sure that jives with the bolded.

I'm not insinuating that you did, but by your own admission, you didn't know much about Gainey, so I tried to give you a picture of what he is, which is essentially a poor man's Jordan McRae. I don't remember much of McBee playing PG, but if he did, I probably just tried to erase it from my memory.

I’ve watched plenty of his highlights, just not game film to determine where he played…as I said I presumed mostly the 2 but going off assist stats and measurements of other teammates it would appear at the very least he played some PG while there.

Sadly McBee didn't get minutes until his last 2 seasons with Martin here...and no one was scoring during those dark times o_O

Wait...you mean to tell me the staff PASSED on Perry and not the other way around?

I'm going to stick with you on this one, but I find that to be a very interesting twist, and one I'd almost have to hear from Rick Barnes's mouth to believe. He seemed to check off every box (PG, shooter, defender, character, etc).

As @Stoerner Fumbles has said they liked him, but there were some questions as to what he/those around him were looking for and how that would mesh with the team. From what I’ve gathered they are comfortable enough at PG and didn’t see that as being worth the risk/need.

If that's truly the case, pure negligence.

Not only that, but they are not guaranteed to land Ledlum or Knecht. You should at the very least bring him in. Makes zero sense.

I believe he has the highest asking price of anyone in the portal. I think the staff is probably smart not to open that can of worms.

He played in every game and averaged double digit minutes under Pearl…

And? he also averaged less than 3 FGAs during those 2 seasons... even if he hit all of them that's only 6-9 points he could max at.

His minutes nearly doubled in his 2 years with Martin and he also played in every game and started 28 of them.

Obviously Perry is as good as it gets from a PG. He has a history with Clark. They’ve watched him for a long time. For better or worse, we don’t do well with prospects who have demands and competing offers before they visit. That is obviously a dissatisfying answer, but it’s a factual one. Barnes isn’t going to wheel and deal prior to meeting a player.
