Tennessee Transfer Portal Targets

Obviously Perry is as good as it gets from a PG. He has a history with Clark. They’ve watched him for a long time. For better or worse, we don’t do well with prospects who have demands and competing offers before they visit. That is obviously a dissatisfying answer, but it’s a factual one. Barnes isn’t going to wheel and deal prior to meeting a player.
If he is as good as it gets, Barnes needs to wheel and deal.

We only have one that we know can play it well and he has a busted wheel.
Mashack done pretty good and Dillone can play point,B.J. if he can play some defense can play point and Vescovi if he comes back and ZZ should be able to go by January at full speed that's just ten or eleven games to start year and the SEC season is where Barnes really needs him as of now The Maui classic is the hardest part of season before SEC

For what it's worth... the 2.3 EcoBoost engine the 4th generation Focus could have in it was debuted in the 2015 Mustang, producing over 300 HP & LB-FT of torque, It was even stronger in the Ford Focus RS ;)

I get the concern, but I think the staff has recruited the guard position pretty well. I think unless it's a clear upgrade at PG they see no point in just adding a body there.

BJ Edwards was a top 20 PG nationally and now has a full season under his belt
Freddie Dilione was a top 10 CG nationally and has half a season under his belt
Cameron Carr is a top 10 SG nationally
Jahmai Mashack was a top 75 player nationally and will be entering year 3
DJ Jefferson was a top 30 SF nationally and has a full season under his belt

You really just need 1 or 2 of them to be comfortable bringing the ball up if Santi returns and then once ZZ is healthy you'll be a better team overall. I think if Jordan Gainey had any other name people would be excited based on his size & stats.
I'm not really a car guy, so my illustration was admittedly very generic and obviously ignorant, but I think I made the point I was trying to make.

As for the guys you listed, any guard can bring the ball up the floor. My main concern is getting into our offense with "any guard", and what playing PG does to them by putting them on the ball. Dilione is the one I'm least concerned about because he's played PG and score the ball off the dribble. We clearly aren't a team that is going to get going in transition, so almost all of our offensive possessions are going to take place in the halfcourt in our offensive sets. I'd feel better about letting any guard handle the ball if we looked to push the pace and score in transition more, but most of the guys you listed aren't adept enough ball-handlers and/or quick enough to push and weave thru defenders on the fast break and score like Kennedy Chandler. Dilione is the closest thing we have to that.

Wait...you mean to tell me the staff PASSED on Perry and not the other way around?

I'm going to stick with you on this one, but I find that to be a very interesting twist, and one I'd almost have to hear from Rick Barnes's mouth to believe. He seemed to check off every box (PG, shooter, defender, character, etc).
I’m not saying he was trying to commit, we passed on bringing him in on a visit.

I respect that a lot actually. I'm sure the staff would be more than willing to work with Perry but if it requires promises just to land a visit I totally get it.

Kansas will have Hunter Dickinson, Jesse Edwards, and Harrison Ingram on campus this weekend. Must be nice. BUT CULTURE. Bill Self must not know what he's doing bringing in those heachaches...
I mean we did beat Kansas and go farther than them in the tourney this year.

Not saying I wouldn't like to be Kansas and have Bill Self, but Barnes' process has worked pretty well here.

And? he also averaged less than 3 FGAs during those 2 seasons... even if he hit all of them that's only 6-9 points he could max at.

His minutes nearly doubled in his 2 years with Martin and he also played in every game and started 28 of them.
Was just referring to the not getting minutes part

I feel like because we run motion and the PG really isn't guaranteed to have the ball for the majority of the possession AND we rarely run set plays it's maybe less of a concern? I love Perry on paper, but a guy with 1 year left that spent 2 seasons at the JuCo level throwing out big NIL numbers just to visit would be a red flag to me as well.

At this point I'm fine with adding scorers like Knecht, Gainey, Ledlum and letting the young guard talent have the opportunity to develop. If any 1 of them can figure out how to be a PG then we could be in for a very fun season with so much depth & talent.

Mashack ran the point a lot in HS too, but with KC & ZZ both here his first two seasons he just never was asked to do it until the end of this past season. So I think he could surprise people. I'm also optimistic that BJ Edwards could be developed to be a good PG here.

Ughhh...extremely dissatisfying. But, it tells me that the staff didn't pass because they don't view PG as a need, which I found EXTREMELY hard to believe. It just tells me that Barnes isn't willing to play the game. Unfortunately, if that is the case, the system is about to pass him by. That's just the nature of the beast these days, like it or not. It also tells me that we should just stop getting our hopes up for any of the top names annually in the portal. Barnes will still win games with his model, but I'm afraid he's not going to maximize our potential if he isn't willing to adapt.

Lastly, how is this any different than the Julian Phillips situation, last year, other than Perry already being a proven product? JP had demands that we seemingly met.

There are other portal PG’s, they didn’t pursue, there’s a reason for that.

He’s bringing in 2 highly regarded transfers for a visit, and continues to land Top 10 recruiting classes, not sure how we can claim the system is going to pass him by.
