Tennessee Transfer Portal Targets

Wow. Been a crazy day at work and so I haven’t checked the board much. I come on here to see that I’ve missed…..a lot.

I can’t say there is anything new I can add. Feels like most of what I would say has already been said 10 times.

I’ll just chime in and say, yes my own personal opinion is that going a 2nd straight season without addressing the PG issue is a failure, even if staff feels “we’re okay.” We thought that last year too and look how that turned out.

Also, it’s starting to sound like the feel is Phillips is gone no matter what which just REALLY sucks. Huge loss. And so weird he’d be okay with being a late 2nd round pick just to get the hell out of school. If our off-season is losing Phillips and not getting a PG, and bringing in either Knecht or Ledlum and Gainey as a walk on that will hurt quite a bit. It does NOT mean I don’t think this team can be good next year though.
Can't disagree with much of that. Still think we're going to be really good, top 10-15 or so, but no Phillips and no PG would hurt. Plenty of time and new names showing up in the portal though.

To your last paragraph, yes, it does seem like there has been a subtle shift in messaging from “we think he is going to declare, but depending on feedback he gets, he could return” to “he is going to declare and we don’t expect him back” pretty much across the board. In my experience, that usually means there is smoke, and I would suspect he is going to declare and hire an agent rather than this portal nonsense.

Indiana fans on twitter seem to think Ledlum to them is a done deal. I know we are confident getting him and Knect on campus together this weekend, but what is the plan if we strike out on one or both of them? Not trying to be overly negative, just seems like a fair question to ask at this point.

Any other assistant coaches have kids with eligibility remaining?

I kid I kid.

I don’t know if this is the argument you are trying to make - and I don’t think anyone here is advocating to transition to resetting the roster every year through the portal - but Elite 8 teams Miami, Kansas State, Texas, and Creighton all had considerable contributions from the portal. By considerable, I mean they likely wouldn’t have gotten to that level (or the FF in Miamis case) without them. There’s possibly an argument for Gonzaga as well but they were going so far as Timme would take them.

UConn's 3rd leading scorer and assist leader was from the portal from East Carolina. Manek averaged 15/6 for UNC after transferring from Oklahoma in their 2021-22 championship game season. Caleb Daniels started for and averaged over 10 a game for Villanova, who also went to the final four. He transferred from Tulane. The year before Johnny Juzang led UCLA in scoring. He transferred from Kentucky. They went to the final four.

A huge roster full of transfers is just for complete rebuilds. But having a good, key transfer seems to aid a great deal of teams in reaching the final four.

Yep, thanks, I figured there were other good, recent examples. I think much like many successful pro teams build through the draft and fill holes with free agents and trades, successful college teams will have both recruiting and portal success going forward.

It seems like age is such a huge factor in NBA front office decision making as well. Players get a year to be "raw" products, and it seems the trend is that the "raw" players who stay in college tend to drop the next year unless they have a huge leap in production. I think it's actually riskier for JP's career to come back to college. If he thinks he can be drafted at all, and he still appears in most mocks, he needs to take the chance. Earlier in the season, he was regularly showing up in the back half of the first round, so him wowing at the combine could pop him back up there.

Big difference between Chandler and JP: Chandler had NBA skills but not an NBA body. JP has every NBA measurable but not the developed offensive skill set. NBA coaches all believe they can teach/develop better than the NCAA coaches, and you can't coach height, weight, wingspan, and speed/acceleration metrics. In the NBA draft, measurables supersede skills often.

If Santi comes back and Philips doesn't leave, where do you rotate Mashack and Phillips? I feel like they both thrive when they play the 3 spot.

Lots of options at CG still available too.

I could see us potentially giving Jarden Bynum some interest depending on how things go over this weekend with visits. He'd be entering his 6th year in college, career 10.3 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 4.2 apg, 1.1 spg guy. 5'10" 180lb guy that spent 1 year at St. Joseph's then 4 at Providence.
Wheeler headed back to Georgia? Don’t know that I’d take a guy back who transferred out

In the transfer portal world, probably more so than the regular recruiting world, if a kid is still taking visits, he isn't a done deal to anyone. In fact, if I'm Indiana, I'm concerned that he hasn't shut it down and is still taking visits.
