Tennessee Transfer Portal Targets

In the transfer portal world, probably more so than the regular recruiting world, if a kid is still taking visits, he isn't a done deal to anyone. In fact, if I'm Indiana, I'm concerned that he hasn't shut it down and is still taking visits.
I agree. Not saying I think he’s going to IU, was more just a setup to ask if we have any backups

More specifically on Perry, he’s known Clark for almost a decade. They’ve spent a lot of time together. Clark knows both his parents well. Perry wants a specific set of things we can’t guarantee. We didn’t shut the door. We didn’t pass on him. He didn’t pass on us. We just can’t give him what he wants.

I know it’s hard to hear but we are not an attractive destination for transfers. People on here like to act like we don’t have talent, but we’ve got good talent at every position and a coach who won’t lie to kids and promise starting roles/a certain amount of minutes. If you want to transfer and be a starting point guard or shooting guard why on earth would you choose Tennessee which has one of the best duos in Ziegler and Vescovi if he returns. Add in a 5 star freshman in Dilione and it just does not make sense

Wow. Been a crazy day at work and so I haven’t checked the board much. I come on here to see that I’ve missed…..a lot.

I can’t say there is anything new I can add. Feels like most of what I would say has already been said 10 times.

I’ll just chime in and say, yes my own personal opinion is that going a 2nd straight season without addressing the PG issue is a failure, even if staff feels “we’re okay.” We thought that last year too and look how that turned out.

Also, it’s starting to sound like the feel is Phillips is gone no matter what which just REALLY sucks. Huge loss. And so weird he’d be okay with being a late 2nd round pick just to get the hell out of school. If our off-season is losing Phillips and not getting a PG, and bringing in either Knecht or Ledlum and Gainey as a walk on that will hurt quite a bit. It does NOT mean I don’t think this team can be good next year though.

Agree. I don’t understand why we struggle in the portal. Phillips leaning towards NBA doesn’t surprise me as much.

Because Vescovi isn’t a PG and ZZ is a 5’8 PG coming off an ACL tear. Plenty of programs stacked with talent can still pull in high profile transfers.

I think he’s fine going 2nd round, if he’s told that not getting drafted is likely then I could see him maybe returning…I don’t see him transferring.

This may not be appreciated, but from a lot of what I have read, this young man has a bunch of knuckleheads advising him!

As @Stoerner Fumbles has said they liked him, but there were some questions as to what he/those around him were looking for and how that would mesh with the team. From what I’ve gathered they are comfortable enough at PG and didn’t see that as being worth the risk/need.

I’m not saying it has to be Perry, but it’s very bizarre that the staff is willing to roll the dice with what we currently have at point guard imo. Seems like they’re banking on ZZ being ready to roll early in the season and that Edwards and/or Dillione will be able to successfully fill the backup PG role.

2023 NBA Draft Early Entrant Tracker - Rookie Scale

I found this and thought it might be helpful for some. Perry for example will probably not or will commit before NBA evaluation?

Good stuff, I noticed ON is in there as well as my #1 PG target Judah Mintz

Quite a few names that are committed to new places are in there as well, so if they get good evaluations may get drafted instead.

Yuri Collins, Jahvon Quinerly, Tyrese Hunter, Tylor Perry, Tyger Campbell, Jeremy Roach, El Ellis, Primo Spears, LJ Cryer all in there and only a few are also in the portal.

If the staff feels a PG is a need I think post NBA draft evaluation period they'll go get one.

Jokes aside, desirable portal players obviously want four things, a story about fit, a story about playing time, a story about becoming more desirable in the draft, a defined sum of money now. Barnes is always willing to discuss fit and increasing talent and skill for draft. He will not discuss NIL money (breaking a rule) and will not guarantee playing time. Barnes vets players, shares fit and growth, and then says the rest happens on a visit. We have expressed interest in 5-10x more players in the portal. We haven’t changed the steps, and won’t. We also still vet players before visit. These things seem non-negotiable. Anyone who knows staff will say the same. Obviously there are coaches like Muss who will absolutely make all the promises and close the deal. High risk=High reward. I’m not here to sell the benefits of one over the other, but there truly are benefits to our way too.

An Elite 8? A Final Four? The dream would be to someday win a NC, but right now, I'll settle for getting past the Sweet 16. Shouldn't that be the goal? If you're not trying to be the best, what's the point?

And that's not a criticism of Barnes. I like Barnes. I just want him to get us further. Hell, he should want to get further. If he doesn't, then that would be a problem.

I think it's also fair to say that just because to this point, even with several very good teams, Barnes has only ever made it to the S16 does not prove that his current process isn't capable of going any farther. People were saying the same thing about Tony Bennett (especially after losing to UMBC [my alma-mater, that game was awesome...]), and the next year he went all the way.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that if you want great tournament results, the best thing you can do is put yourself consistently in the tournament with a high-ish seed and hope the chaos works in your favor more often than not. Though Barnes has done exactly that, we've been on the wrong side of March Madness luck, but I don't necessarily take that as a sign that he's doing something wrong in the tournament, and I still wouldn't be at all surprised to see a F4 at some point in the next few years.

DeMary has contacted staff. Will be interesting to see where that goes. Liked his HS game a lot.
Well, that seems to perhaps put to rest my (mis)remembering of there being talk that Dilione and Demary wouldn't attend the same school. Good to hear because I liked Demary a lot when we were recruiting him.
